Frieda Schellhase Obituary

SCHELLHASE, FRIEDA GAUSE, 91 of Severna Park, MD, formerly of Annapolis and Baltimore, MD passed away of natural causes on October 29, 2012. Born August 6, 1921, Baltimore, MD to William & Sophia Gause, she attended Western High School. In 1941 she married Otto E. Schellhase, whom she met through youth fellowship gatherings at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Her early married life was spent as a homemaker. In later years she worked in the family restaurant business, Schellhase's, with her husband at 412 N. Howard Street in Baltimore, an establishment well known as the meeting place for theatre luminaries of the "20's, "30's and "40's" and home to H.L. Mencken's Saturday Night Club. Schellhase's was a German Restaurant known for its sauerbraten, wiener schnitzel, oysters and cold German Beer. Prior to his death in 2005, her husband Otto Schellhase was very active in the Restaurant Association of Maryland and had served as president and comptroller.

Frieda is survived by her two beloved sons: Robert O. & Ronald J. Schellhase; daughters-in law Joan and Jeanne Schellhase; 3 granddaughters: Amanda K. Bredeck, Margaret E. White and Kristin K. Schellhase; 5 great-grandchildren, her sister Hilda Gause of Baltimore and various nieces and nephews. Mrs. Schellhase was predeceased by her brother William Gause and sister Gertrude Sabo.

Frieda was an accomplished seamstress and made many beautiful clothes, crocheted sweaters, scarves and many other craft items. Her life was devoted to her husband and family.

The family will be receiving friends at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care, 814 Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD on Sunday, November 4 from 4-6 p.m. and Monday, November 5 from 10-11 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, November 5 at Lasting Tributes Cremation & Funeral Care. Interment will be at Parkwood Cemetery, 3310 Taylor Avenue, Baltimore, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Household of Angels Assisted Living, 118 Arundel Beach Road, Severna Park, MD 21146. Joan and Bob: We were very sorry to hear of your Mother's death, please accept our sincere sympathy. Memories of Schellhase's Restaurant on Howard St. in Baltimore will always be with us; my Mother and Father took me there as a very little girl and I believe the last time was in the early 1950's.
