Dr. George Warren Settle passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on November 9, 2021. George was born in Baltimore, MD to Norman and Charlotte Settle on October 4, 1926. He grew up in Catonsville, MD where he attended Catonsville High School, and later joined the US Navy in 1944 after two years at Friends School in Baltimore, MD. In the Navy, George was an Electronics Technician's Mate Second Class USNR and worked on the USS Taussig (DD746 - China) from 1944-1946. After returning from naval service, George's father enrolled him at Johns Hopkins University where he studied to become an orthopedic surgeon, graduating medical school in 1953. His medical internship took place at Seattle King County Hospital in Washington state and residency training at Boston Harvard Service before returning to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1959. A year later, George moved to Annapolis, MD and began his private practice and had privileges at Anne Arundel General Hospital where he became Chief of Orthopedic Surgery. He later worked in Washington D.C. as the medical director for Potomac Electric Company and later returned to his private practice on Duke of Gloucester St. in downtown Annapolis where he worked until he retired. Beyond being a surgeon, George served on the Appellate Courts Judicial Nominating Commission for the state of Maryland and spent time as treasurer for St. Anne's Episcopal Church located in the heart of Annapolis, MD. While George took pride in his work as a physician, he was what many in his family called a "Renaissance man", and enjoyed the arts. In his free time, you could find George painting, sculpting, performing ironwork, gardening, reading about history, cooking, or writing poetry. Being good with his hands, he built natural stone fireplaces in his daughters' homes as well as garden bridges, stone walls, and multiple ponds throughout his property. He traveled extensively throughout the world with his family spending time outdoors hiking, touring and even mountain climbing. He shared and passed his love for travel onto many of his grandchildren. Some of their best trips were with their beloved grandfather. Above all else, George especially enjoyed his time with his expansive family. He was devoted to his wife, Geraldine Waybright, whom he was married to for 68 years. He was a romantic and a wonderful dancer. Many of his granddaughters remember having their special dance with him at their weddings. George is survived by his four children, George W. Settle Jr. of Dillsburg, PA, Ann Kristine (Settle) Scriba of Millersville, MD, Beth Ellen (Settle) Cunningham of Millersville, MD, and Thomas Norman Settle of Arnold, MD, as well as his 22 beloved grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. George was privately laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Salvation Army at
