Harry Blumenthal Obituary

Harry C. Blumenthal, age 83, of Annapolis, Maryland and Boca Raton, Florida died on December 22, 2020 following a complicated illness. Harry was a renowned zoning and land use attorney in Anne Arundel County, Maryland for nearly 60 years. He began his studies at Johns Hopkins University at the age of 16, and received his law degree from the University of Maryland. He began his law practice in Annapolis with the late Bowie Rose and thereafter opened his own firm; associating with numerous partners over the years, the last being Blumenthal, Delavan, Powers & Palmer, P.A. He mentored many young attorneys. At the time of his death, he was acting of counsel to the firm Liff, Walsh & Simmons, LLC. He represented real estate developers in countless projects that included the planned community of Crofton, the expansion of the Anne Arundel County Medical Center, redevelopment of the Laurel Race Track, Annapolis Technology Park, South River Colony, and Marley Station Mall. He assisted thousands of private clients, some over several generations, in order to obtain zoning approvals to use and develop their properties. He also lobbied on behalf of commercial clients at both the local and state level. He served as counsel to the Anne Arundel County Board of License Commissioners overseeing Liquor Board hearings for more than two decades. He was a member of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce, and BWI Business Partnership. Harry was a consummate gentleman with those he represented as well as those he opposed. He worked intimately with planning and zoning staff on behalf of clients and treated all with fairness and respect. He was known for his bright and creative legal mind, keen sense of humor, dapper style of dress, and passion for modern art. He was fond of introducing Linda as "my first wife" and always responding "I'm wonderful" when asked how he was doing, even in his final days. He was truly one of a kind and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda Applefeld Blumenthal, his son Ned Blumenthal and wife Renay and grandchildren Michael Charles and Rachel Lynn, his daughter Joan Richardson, her husband Elton Parnell and grandchild Lesley F. Funk, and his sister, Rona Rosenbaum. Donations in his memory may be made to the Anne Arundel Medical Center, care of the AAMC Foundation, 2000 Medical Parkway, Belcher Pavilion Suite 604, Annapolis, Maryland 21401.

Harry was the smartest person I have ever met. He was always ready to give me any advice I needed. It will be a great loss in the Real Estate Community of Anne Arundel County. Watching him in court was like watching a great movie.

Very sad to hear about Harry. He was definitely a gentleman. More than 20 years ago, he was a member of the USAirways Club, at which I worked and helped him with his flights. Harry would enter the club at BWI with a smile on his face. He was always a delight to see. Very kind and generous. So very sorry for his loss.

Dear family of Harry, I lived in Severna Park as a teenager and babysat for Ned and Joan many times. Your dad sold my father, James Pinkus, the land just down the hill from your house. We were neighbors for several years. He was such a kind and generous man, as was your mother. I’m sincerely sorry to hear of his passing. My maiden name was Carla Pinkus. God bless you all.

So many superlatives come to mind when describing Harry. I will always remember him simply as a good and decent man, an ethical and professional lawyer, a generous and humorous friend, and a gentleman of the old school whose likes we no longer see. God Bless and keep you close my friend.

Dear Linda and Ned:

As one of Harry’s former partners, I have many fond memories of him. In addition to his background which is so well described in the obituary, I remember him for his personal warmth, kindness and generousity. May his memory always be a blessing.

Harry played a very significant role in establishing my engineering and development company. He referred many client to my practice.

We had many laughs over the 43 of association. He was amazed how I could start a boat engine with with a screwdriver. I helped him buy Ned’s first boat “Sonbird” I will miss him dearly
