Harry A. Calender

1940 - 2023

Harry A. Calender, age 82, of Severna Park and earlier years at Cape St. Claire passed away the evening of January 9th at BWMC. On December 31, 1940 at Newark, NJ, Harry was born to Okal and Anna Catherine Calender. He was raised in Roaring Spring, PA and graduated from Roaring Spring High School. Harry was a proud graduate of Penn State University and would light up when he met fellow Penn Staters. His Masters in Education and Administration was earned at West Virginia University. Harry was a dedicated educator in Anne Arundel Public Schools for 44 years starting his career at Annapolis Junior High in 1962. His last position was as principal for 21 years at Chesapeake High School where he liked working with the students, fellow educators, and the community. He was a recipient of the 1991 Washington Post Distinguished Educational Leadership Award for Anne Arundel County. Harry enjoyed family trips traveling to historic sites, Colonial Williamsburg, and Longwood Gardens. His dream trip to visit Alaska came true June 2015. Mount Vernon-George Washington "Lunch talks", plays at the Hippodrome, watching Penn State football, reading all genres, collecting stamps, classes at A.A.C.C., puttering around in his yard, and sitting in his screened porch brought him much enjoyment during his retirement years. Harry leaves behind his wife of 56 years, Kathy Popp Calender. He is survived by his beloved son, Matthew Calender of Glen Burnie, and sister-in-law Frances Liddle of Toms River, NJ. A visitation will be held Sunday, January 15, 2023 from 2 to 4pm at Barranco Severna Park Funeral Home, 495 Ritchie Hwy, Severna Park, MD 21146.
