Herman Schieke Obituary

Herman Edward Schieke, Jr., 72, of Centreville for 4 years, and previously a lifelong resident of Anne Arundel County (Edgewater and Annapolis), died July 29, at Easton Memorial Hospital of natural causes.

He was born January 7, 1937 in Annapolis. He was an Annapolis High School graduate; then earned a BS from Duke University.

Mr. Schieke worked for Simpson Land Company as Director of Operations from 1963-1988; then worked from 1988-1994 for the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau, where he was their first director; then worked from 1994-2005 for the Calvert County Government as a tourism specialist.

He was a linguist in the United States Air Force from 1959-63; the Air Force sent him to Indiana University to learn Russian, and he was then stationed as a linguist in Turkey.

Mr. Schieke was named Travel Person of the Year by the Maryland Tourism Council; was also named Business Leader of the Year by the Anne Arundel Trade Council.

He was a member of Maryland Tourism Council; was a former distinguished past president of Kiwanis International; National Tour Association; American Business Association; Greater Washington Society of Association Executives; Calvert County Historical Society; and the Arts Council of Calvert County.

Hobbies included needlework, travel, and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Dornheim Schieke, whom he married June 27, 1964; son: Herman Edward "Ted" Schieke, III of Centreville; daughter, Barbara Schieke Pease of Chesapeake Beach; brother, Richard Waters Schieke of Polson, MT; grandchildren: Matthew Edward Schieke, and William Richard Pease.

Memorial service: Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Interment: private
