John Smith Obituary

John Charles Smith, of Annapolis, died at home surrounded by family on November 5, 2023 at age 73, following complications from Parkinson's disease. Born in Baltimore on September 16, 1950, son of the late Helen Beverly Iglehart and the late Charles Walter Smith, John was raised in Ellicott City with his two sisters, Sharon and Beverly. He attended the University of Maryland, where he graduated with a degree in psychology. John returned to the University of Maryland in Baltimore to pursue his professional degree in pharmacy, where he met his beloved wife, Judy. They married in 1977. In 1986, they moved to their Annapolis home of 37 years. John considered their home along the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay to be "a little bit of heaven." With deep commitment and love for one another, John and Judy created a loving family that has been their life's central focus. They raised two daughters, Lana and Andrea. John was a loyal sports fan and enjoyed coaching his daughters' basketball and lacrosse teams over the years. Dedicated to meaningful work and service, John had a rewarding, 40-year career in pharmacy serving his community, which often included neighbors and friends. A patient, careful listener, he delighted in helping people during a challenging time, or providing advice when needed. In retirement, John volunteered at the Anne Arundel County Food Bank and served as a Eucharistic minister at St. Mary's parish. John loved to sing and play guitar. He relished any time spent on boats or near the water, especially the ocean. He was grateful for the time he spent with his four grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved family: his loving wife of 46 years, Judy Wenzel Smith; his daughters, Lana Smith Weber (Charles) and Andrea Smith Gosselin (Sathya); his grandchildren, Ingrid and Elise Weber, and Oona and Marcus Gosselin; his sisters, Sharon Stoliaroff (John Stewart) and Beverly Smith (late Robert Harrison); his brother-in-law, Bruce Wenzel; his cousin, Mary Linzey Gable (Roger Stitt); and his cherished nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates donations to: Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he received excellent care throughout his life; and Parkinson's Foundation (parkinsons.org).
