John Vickerman Obituary

John Clifford Vickerman died on April 2, 2021. Vickerman was born on November 7, 1937, in Canton, SD, to Clifford E. and Eva (Carlson) Vickerman. He attended Augustana College and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He participated in choirs at both schools and enjoyed a lifetime of choral singing. He appeared at Carnegie Hall twice. In 1959, he joined the Navy where he attended Navy OCS. He was awarded the Secretary of the Navy's commendation medal and was promoted to full Lieutenant in the reserves. Following his military service, he was the Editor and part-owner of the Sioux Valley News in Canton, SD. He then came to Washington DC as a congressional staffer and joined the Small Business Administration where he held several positions. He received the agency's gold medal for excellence in management. He subsequently held positions in both Nixon and Ford White Houses. Following this service, he became an association executive managing a number of trade and health groups. He served as President of the Annapolis Chorale, President of the Pointfield Landing Community Association, President of the New Providence Club, member of the Anne Arundel County Farmers' Market and was a five-term vestryman at St. Paul's Anglican Church. He was life member of the Masons, a life member of the Scottish Rite, and a member of the American Legion and the Fleet Reserve. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Diana, the daughter of John and Ruth Dornan in Corning, NY, and four children, Kari (Rick) Yent of Juno Beach, FL; Mark J. (Kim) of Millersville, MD; Kristen (John) Welch of Scituate, MA; and Dr. Peter C. (Elizabeth) of Rockport, ME; and his seven grandchildren; Michael, Andrew, Kelsey, Eva, John, Bridget and Katie. In addition, survivors include his brother Thomas D. of Oro Valley, AZ; Paul C. of Council Bluffs, IA; and his sister Glennann (Dennis) Hanson of Tuscon, AZ. Visitation will be held at Barranco Funeral Home in Severna Park, MD on Thursday, April 15, 2021 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Services will be held at St. Paul's Church in Crownsville, MD on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. Inurnment will be privately held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
