Kenneth Addison Obituary

Kenneth Wynn Addison, who died on August 27, 2023 at the age of 88, was often to be seen in recent years quietly walking his dog Sally in Heritage Harbour and talking with neighbors. He is roundly remembered as a kind and cheerful man, a "true gentleman", who shared wisdom modestly from his international career and was always eager to lend a hand. Born on January 24, 1935 in Cheshire, England as the only son of Harold and Winifred (née Morris) Addison, Ken graduated from Sandbach School in Cheshire in 1952. Early on, Ken discovered a keen interest in geography and cartography, which led to his first job at the UK Ordnance Survey. His fascination was lifelong: he was wont to whip out an atlas when friends visited, point to landmarks worldwide and share personal vignettes. After military service in British Forces Germany, Ken began a 31-year career with Balfour Beatty in 1957. He studied at the Liverpool College of Building, becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer in 1965 and a European Engineer (EurIng) in 1993. Besides the UK, he worked in Sweden, Pakistan, Taiwan, Korea and the United States. In 1976 Ken moved with his family to the U.S., serving as Vice President of Electrack, a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty, in Washington, D.C. In 1988 he worked for Bechtel and then for Parsons Brinkerhoff until his retirement in 2000. Ken met Sharon Lockwood, his late wife, while living in Red Bank, NJ. They married in 1997 and moved to Queenstown, MD in 1999. An avid sailor his whole life, the Chesapeake area was his American home. He was a member of the Miles River Yacht Club, where he ran the Jr. Sailing Program. Ken and Sharon moved to Annapolis from Queenstown in 2015. Ken and Sharon had been very active for the Democratic Club of Queen Anne's County. After Sharon died in early 2017, Ken continued their commitment to promoting a more caring society by co-founding, at the age of 82, the Democratic Club of Heritage Harbour and assisting Democratic Party candidates seek elected office. After his bereavement, Ken felt deeply blessed to find such a loving companion in Dolores Mish, of Gambrills, MD and to have been embraced into her caring family of three sons and their wives, Bill and Linda, Patrick and Devon, Kevin and Jennifer, step-daughter Donna and 14 grandchildren. Ken's final years were a time of growing contentment and joy, grateful for all the friendships, old and new, that enriched his life. Kenneth Wynn Addison is survived by his two daughters, Julie and Helen Addison. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ken's name may be made to the Arundel Volunteer Fire Department (www.arundelfire.com).
