Lucy Libby Obituary

Lucy Slade Libby, of the Pleasant Plains area of Annapolis, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2018, one week shy of her 97th birthday. She was born in Blanch, North Carolina, one of six children of Harry and Fannie Slade. After graduating from Duke University with a degree in nursing, Lucy joined the army at the start of WWII. She was very proud of her service as an army nurse, and she enjoyed speaking to various groups about her experiences in the Pacific Theater. Lucy was a long standing member of the Calvery United Methodist Church , enjoyed singing in the choir, and a member of P.E.O. International. She also was an avid gardener and many of her plants have been shared throughout Annapolis. She enjoyed playing bridge and visiting with her neighbors, especially in her later years. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Edwin C. Libby, whom she met in the army. She is survived by her sister, Betsy Wampler, and her children, Ron Libby, Gayle Curtiss, and Jan French. She also is survived by her five grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Condolences can be shared with the family at Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 Rowe Blvd., from 9:00-9:45 am on Friday, January 19th. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church or the Women In Military Service For America Memorial at Women in the Military Service War Memorial Foundation, Dept. 560, Washington, D.C. 20043-0560

Many fond memories of seeing Lucy and "Libby" at my grandparents house in Danville, VA Learning later on that she was a WWII veteran and served on the island of Saipan was an inspiration. Rest now and forever, we've got it from here.

I will miss seeing Miss Lucy on my walks. I could always count on her to tell me what side of the street I should be walking on (for safety)! I had the privilege of knowing Lucy as my neighbor and friend. She touched many lives, bringing smiles to all. I attended her beautiful memorial service and was really touched by all the stories and memories. She will be missed.

It was an honor and privilege to know Lucy. When short a Scripture reader for Sunday I could always count on Lucy. We enjoyed Bible study together at her home. She became my hero through her courage to stand for justice. Lucy was our true friend, a beacon of integrity and love.

We are all so saddened to read of Ms. Libby's passing...heaven gained a great lady! It was always fun to engage in conversation with her whenever we crossed paths in the neighborhood. She was one of my younger son's favorite customers when he delivered newspapers, a long time ago.

Our hearts ache for your loss, but she was clearly needed elsewhere. May fond memories aid in healing.

All the best,
Lynda, Jeff, Matt and Danny Fitzgerald

I had the privilege of driving Ms. Libby to dental appointments several times through the Chores and More organization. She was a charming lady with an upbeat, positive attitude that made her very enjoyable company. I am delighted to have known her.

We are out of town for the service but want her family to know that we will miss her walking and talking thru the neighborhood.

Lucy was so special... we first met during a very difficult time in my life. Lucy knew just what I needed and she took me under her wing and got me involved in Calvary UMC. She was an amazing person, everyone adored her and she truly lit up the room when she entered. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Rest in Peace my friend.
