Peter Perry Obituary

Peter M. Perry, 83, of Harwood, MD passed away on November 22, 2024 with his family at his side. He was born in Queens, NY to the late George A. Perry and Larissa P. Perry. During Dr. Perry's career as an astrophysicist, he was Director of Science Programs with C.S.C (Computer Sciences Corporation) with projects including IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer) and the Hubble Space Telescope. In his retirement, he ran for public office, produced astronomy, cooking, and other shows for cable access TV, and also created astronomical instructional content for amateur astronomers. He always found time for our community. He was chairman of the Anne Arundel County Forestry Board, the Davidsonville Area Civic Association, the Anne Arundel County Farmers' Market, the Small Area Plan for South County and numerous other committees. Peter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen N. Perry; his two sons, Peter J. Perry (Deborah L. Byrd) of Gaithersburg, Maryland and George A. Perry (Megan A. Perry) of Lothian, Maryland; his two grandsons, Peter B. Perry and Rixford A. Perry; his granddaughter, Brynlee Anne Perry; his niece, Maryam Springer (Russell) and his grandnephew, Cedar of Glen Burnie, Maryland. Per his request, no funeral services will be held. If, however, you have time or the inclination, on a clear night, look up and see the amazing stars and planets that encompass us-Peter would have enjoyed that. Dear George and family:
My condolences on the death of your family. I didn't know him well but had the chance to meet him at several Russian Easter gatherings. Now I know where George got much of his passion for life, family, and the world in general. I always come away better educated about local and national politics, education, and horses after our conversations while you trimmed my horses. May your Dad rest in peace.

Helen, Peter and George: Kate and I are so sorry for your loss. Peter was a remarkable person. I am indebted to him for my career at CSC - as you know, he hired me as a Resident Astronomer for IUE in 1977 and was my boss at CSC for 20 years until he retired in 1997. He was a wise manager who expertly guided a number of astronomical projects, including not only IUE and Hubble but also the Astro project in which a CSC astronomer flew as a Payload Specialist astronaut on two Space Shuttle missions in the 1990s.
Peter was a great manager and very good at team building and encouraging the career development of his employees and making sure they had opportunities for professional advancement.
I will always fondly remember the collegial brown-bag lunches that Peter held with his staff every workday at the GreenTec office. You could always count on him for interesting conversation and news of his farm, home and family as well as work-related topics. He was a person you were proud to count as a friend as well as a manager and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace and your memories of him be a comfort to you.
