Doctor Welch was truly a gentile giant who was dedicated to helping people improve the quality of life where vision plays such a significant role for all of us! I was just 16 in 1960 when we first met but he always took time to talk with me and a smile when I had an occasional appointment. His hands were twice the size of mine yet he chose a field where the object to be operated on was so small. I'm sure he made great contributions to his area of specialty but his greatest gift was his personality and who he was! ! ! He will be greatly miss! ! !

Dr. Welch was a wonderful ophthalmologist and a wonderful person. He was kind, thoughtful and a great role model. He took over as chief of ophthalmology from Dr. Hoover while I was a resident at GBMC. May he Rest In Peace.

Dr Welch was a wonderful gentlemen. He was kind and thoughtful to all the members of my family who he treated for a rare genetic eye disease. He was a very personable gentleman who never forgot the name of a family member, where they lived, their children’s names, etc. He removed tumors from my eyes about twenty times over a 40-year period. The most painful part of the procedure was getting a needle injected near the eye to numb it. It was usually the responsibility of one of his residents to inject the needle. However, I always requested that Dr Welch do it because he had the softest and most gentle of hands. And he always complied and the needle was so less painful. My wife, Jean, and I continued to see Dr Welch at his Annapolis office after he retired from GBMC. We looked forward to our annual checkups with him there as we had an opportunity to talk to him and Betty who managed the office. And it was always so nice to talk to them both. We will miss Dr Welch. He was kind, humble, smart, and caring, and one of the finest men we’ve ever known. May his soul Rest In Peace. Our condolences to his family and friends.

Dr Welch was a wonderful, thoughtful, and generous gentleman who was a friend and mentor to so many for his entire adult life. Among his many accomplishments was his membership and leadership in the Ancient South River Club, in which he served for nearly 60 years - longer than any other member in the Club's 300 year history. We will miss his cheerful disposition, his wise counsel, and irreplaceable wisdom. God Bless Bob Welch.

I met Dr Welch in 1966 as a 16 year old patient with VHL. I am grateful for his generosity of time, skills, care, and compassion throughout many years. May God rest his soul and continue to bless all who knew him. Maryetta Grabowski
