Ted Mussenden Obituary

Edward Cyr "Ted" Mussenden, a devoted grandfather and a showman with a soaring baritone, died on Thursday, June 11, from pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his family at home in Arnold, Maryland. He was 73. Born August 13, 1946 in Portland, Maine, Ted grew up in nearby Bath, a shipbuilding town. As a young man, he worked with his father, William, at the city's shipyard, the Bath Iron Works, and spent summers living in Boothbay Harbor on a boat named after his mother, Mary Ellen. He graduated from Bath's Morse High School in 1965 and the University of Maine in 1970. Ted maintained a deep connection to Maine after moving to Washington, D.C., the city where he met Pam, his wife of 47 years, on a blind date on New Year's Eve in 1971. He wore a blue tuxedo when they married in 1972, and she carried a bouquet of daisies. They had two children, Sean in 1977 and Katie in 1980. The family moved to the Annapolis area in 1979, and Ted became an active member of the community. He attended First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis for four decades, serving as a deacon and a trustee. He lent his singing voice to the church choir and, last year, developed a church safety plan to protect his beloved congregation. He sang with the Annapolis Opera and performed with local community theaters. His family sponsored a dozen midshipmen over the years, offering their home as a respite from the rigors of the U.S. Naval Academy. And he ran a website, USNA-Rent.com, to help families of graduating midshipmen rent homes for Commissioning Week. Ted had a 50-year career in graphic design, market research and sales, working for McKinsey & Company, The (Baltimore) News American, Ryland Homes, Litigation Communications and other firms. In retirement, he worked for Leadership Anne Arundel, a non-profit that develops community leaders, Williams Sonoma and STAIR-Annapolis, a non-profit that tutors second-graders in reading. With his wife, Ted saw hundreds of Broadway shows and visited more than two dozen countries. He loved to hike, and had been slowly section-hiking the Appalachian Trail. He was an accomplished woodworker, a stained-glass artist and a builder of exquisitely-detailed model ships. He looked forward to lobsters on Thanksgiving, puzzles at Christmas and, always, bread pudding for dessert. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family, especially his 9-year-old granddaughter, Madeline. Three days before he died, he called her "my glory, my sunshine, my lasting hope for a very bright future." She called him Pop-Pop. Ted is predeceased by his father, William Mussenden and his mother, Mary Ellen Mussenden. He is survived by his wife, Pam Mussenden; his daughter, Katie Holquist, son-in-law Doyle Holquist, and granddaughter Madeline Holquist; his son, Sean Mussenden and daughter-in-law Julie Seiwell; his brothers Bill Mussenden and Chris Mussenden; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be scheduled at First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis after the expiration of COVID restrictions, so that the service can include joyous singing by the choir. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in his name to First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis (www.annapolis-presbyterian.com/give) or Hospice of the Chesapeake (hospicechesapeake.org/giving).

Hiking; whenever this activity comes to mind- whether it's because I'm hiking, or I see an image of someone hiking or even see a REA storefront or a commercial- a picture I took on my final hike with Ted, Ralph and Sean and his wife back in September 2017 is immediately refreshed in my grey matter.

Over the years, we did many day hikes- mostly up Old Rag- which always brought back fond experiences of introducing the Youth of 1st Presbyterian to their first hiking outing. He often threatened to take me hiking up in Maine where, as he boasted, 'they have real mountains'! We'll have to save that trip for our next go around...

I truly miss his company and will forever remember his wit, energy, can-do attitude and, especially, hiking skills.
Until we meet again, your friend, Art

Ted or Teddy as he was called back in the day, was one of the neighborhood kids who attended all the elementary schools in the north end of Bath. He was a year behind me but we became good friends. He was a nice guy whose parents were the greatest. Teddy was full of fun, full of energy and a fantastic friend to all.

It was sad to read about his death but nice to know he lived life to the fullest and had a happy life. Rest In Peace, old pal.....

As a high school classmate and friend of Teddys I am deeply saddened by his passing.

Although not running mates we were close enough that we could go to the beach, take boat rides on the Kennebec river and enjoy the recreation center. At one of our class reunions we shared hours in his parents home discussing our lives as only close friends would do. This is a small but true friendships that I am proud to have shared.

Like playing a card game, we work with what we are dealt, and from all that he accomplished through family life and his social achievements I believe that he built a great hand.

May the Lord bless and watch over all who loved and cared for Teddy.

Dear Ted:
It was my pleasure to meet and get to know you over the past 2+ decades. I wish we had more time together so there could have been many more trails to hike and stories/tales to share about our past and present experiences.
I will remember the fun times we had on our road trips to the Virginia hills where we hiked, the trails we enjoyed and most of all, the conversations we shared with each other when we were together. Since you introduced the mile marker metaphor in your final stages of your lifes journey, I will think about you each time I focus in on a road and/or waterway mile marker!
I first met you and sadly will be saying farewell to you at 1st Presbyterian of Annapolis. As I write this note, I can picture you up there in the choir and if I focus in on the music, I can pick your voice out of the crowd during a hymn.
Farwell my friend. Art

If someone was ever in need, Ted would be the first person to step up and ask How can I help and would always follow through. He loved his family, friends, church, music, theater and being with people. We will always miss you Ted.

I'm so very sorry for your loss, Pam. My family has known the Mussenden family since Ted's father Bill and my father Paul were co-workers and good friends at Bath Iron Works many decades ago. I remember Ted from our early teenage years...he was the funny kid with a blonde brush-top crewcut like his Dad's, full of spirit and energy. My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to you and your children, to little Madeline, and to his brothers Bill and Chris. Ted was an inspiration to us all, and I know he'll be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved him.

Sorry to hear of Teds passing. My Aunt Sharon, my mom, Cheryls cousin, posted about him. I recall over the years, family stories about Teddy and my mom and relatives nostalgia. Its never easy to lose someone you love at any age. Its been almost 19 yrs since my moms passing. Sending prayers to you and your family in your time of grievance.

Ted was one of the most caring and kind men that we have encountered in our lifetime. We have not seen Ted or his wonderful family for a while, but we have wonderful memories of times spent with Katie in Ocean City and her friendship with our daughter Melissa. We send our thoughts and hugs to the Mussenden family.
