Walter Shanks Obituary
Walter C. Shanks, 78, a resident of Glen Burnie, passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness on October 1, 2014 at Perry Point VA Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1936 to the late Walter and Nancy Shanks. Walt was a graduate of Penn State with a degree in electrical engineering. He served his country proudly in the United States Army and did a tour of duty in Korea. He was employed with Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman as a test engineer for 37 years. Walt was a basketball coach for CCERA and East Glen Burnie Athletic Club from 1969-1985. He was a longtime member of Messiah United Methodist Church and served in various positions with the trustees, financial committees and the preschool. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Kate Shanks. Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Kathy; three loving children, Margie DeGruchy, Bill Shanks and Susan Tubman; two cherished granddaughters, Kaylie and Jordan DeGruchy; and two dear brothers, Richard and Fred Shanks. Visitation was held yesterday at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, 11 AM, at Messiah United Methodist Church. Interment Glen Haven Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Walter's memory may be made to Messiah United Methodist Church, 7401 East Furnace Branch Road; Glen Burnie, MD 21060.
