George Beardsley Obituary

La Jolla Walking the hills of Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, with his dog, is how George remembered his childhood. The only child of John Beardsley and Helen Marston Beardsley, he studied Physics at Stanford University (B.S.), the University of North Carolina (PhD.), Sandia Laboratories, and Brandeis University. For over a decade, he led the Physics Department at Millsaps College in Jackson, MS, with research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 1985, he moved to San Diego where he worked at Photon Research Associates for over 20 years, specializing in missile defense tactics. For George, it was coming home. As the youngest grandson of civic leader George White Marston, he continued the family legacy in his quiet manner by serving as president and board member of the Torrey Pines Association for eight years, and later as an active docent at the Reserve. He shared his enthusiasm for Stanford by serving on the local alumni board for many years, organizing Stanford's tent at the Crew Classic, participating as a founding member of the Stanford Book Club, and enthusiastically cheering Stanford sports. George was also known for his integrity, keen intellect, and love of books. He is survived by his wife, Constance (Connie); three daughters and their husbands, Megan Beardsley and Kurt Sonen, Ann Arbor, MI; Sarah and Ben Merrifield, Olympia, WA; and Emily and Brian Lepore, Bend, OR; and six grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Torrey Pines Association, the Torrey Pines Docent Society or Stanford University. Just found George on the internet. Sorry to hear he's gone. George and I started kindergarten together in Eagle Rock, and I knew him until I moved in 7th grade. I also studied physics, had an academic career, retired in 1999.

Dr Beardsley taught the calculus-based Physics class I took at Millsaps in 1983-84. It was one of my favorite courses. I appreciated his sense of humor and his ability to bring the concepts he was attempting to convey down to a level that even a History major such as myself could understand. He taught me a great deal. I offer my sincere condolences to his family.

I did not meet George until our shared experiences in raising families in the special Barber Tract neighborhood of La Jolla. George was quiet and a bit reserved so it took a while for me to learn that he had proceeded me at Chapel Hill as well as undergrad years at Stanford. I especially enjoyed his recall of the rigors of early morning training sessions when he rowed on the Stanford crew. In addition to his (with Connie's assistance) providing us with much appreciated baby sitters, I very much respected his finding the time to serve for many years in a leadership role in preserving the quality of San Diego's unique Torrey Pines State Reserve. George had a broad range of interests and expertise and contributed much to the communities in which he lived, I was very sorry that he ultimately lost his quiet but valiant battle with cancer. He will be missed but leaves us with many good memories of a life well-lived. Jack Clausen
