Harry Dougherty Obituary



Harry Baxter "Junior" Dougherty, Jr. 82, of Taneytown, MD died on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Gettysburg Hospital in Gettysburg, PA. Born October 27, 1935 in Taneytown, he was the son of the late Harry Baxter Dougherty, Sr. and the late Bessie Burnham (Stitely) Dougherty. He was the husband of JoAnn (Wolf) Dougherty, to whom he was married for 61 years. Harry was a graduate of Taneytown High School, class of 1953, and was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, majoring in business. He was an entrepreneur who owned and operated several businesses in and around Taneytown over the course of his lifetime, including Dougherty's Ice Company for 49 years, Dougherty's Real Estate, Tropical Shaved Ice, and Dougherty's Ice Cream Shack, to name a few. Dougherty's Country Kitchen was a mainstay at the Great Frederick Fair for 48 years. He enjoyed serving fresh-squeezed lemonade and concessions at the Biglerville Apple Harvest Festival and at the Littlestown and Taneytown Carnivals, as well. Harry also owned and operated school buses for Carroll County Public Schools. He was a life-long member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown. He was also a member of the Taneytown Lions Club, Taneytown Kiwanis Club, Taneytown Chamber of Commerce, the Beehive Club, Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company, Taneytown Rod & Gun Club, and the Taneytown Jaycees, as well as many other organizations over the years. He is survived by son, Tony Dougherty of Keymar, MD; daughter, Tracey Godfrey and husband Scott of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Averey Smith of Arlington, VA, Tifini Dougherty and fiancé Dan Stone of Upperco, MD, Tobi Caleo and husband Nick of Hampstead, MD and Tori Dougherty of Freeland, MD. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 9, 2018 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 38 W. Baltimore St., Taneytown, MD, 21787 with the Rev. Cristopher D. Frigm and Deacon Charles E. Barnhart, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. There will be no public visitation or viewing. Arrangements have been entrusted to MYERS-DURBORAW FUNERAL HOME in Taneytown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harry's name may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at the above address.

Mr. Harry found and returned my wallet on our Schoolbus one day back in the late 60s. He was our driver. Good Honest man. Will always remember him.

Thoughts and prayers to the family on your loss. I will always remember working the Gettysburg battlefield on July 4 with Doc. It was a hoot and a joy!! He and Joanne were great neighbors, too.
