John Mickey Obituary

John William "Jack" Mickey, a kind and generous man, 88, of Sykesville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at home, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 23, 1936, in Baltimore, MD to the late Charles Pritchard Mickey and Muriel Freda Sheffer Mickey. He was the loving husband of almost 64 years to Dorothy Joyce (Graff) Mickey. Together they created a lifetime of memories and family bonds. He was a devoted father to his three daughters as well as his sons-in-law. Jack was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. He worked for Baltimore Gas and Electric Company and retired after 40 years as a transmission engineer and licensed surveyor. He served in the US Air Force National Guard. Jack enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the annual summer trips to the Outer Banks, summer days gathering at the family pool, and Sunday football games cheering on the Ravens. He also loved cats, especially his cat "Mouse," she was always by his side. Jack was also a true Marylander enjoying steamed crabs, Natty Boh, The Baltimore Colts, The Ravens and The Orioles. He was a great story teller and enjoyed his evening Manhattans and an occasional cigar. Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters and sons-in-law: Deborah and Bill Wood of Ellicott City, Carol and Craig Roemer of Sykesville, and Linda and Kurt Morrison of Sykesville; grandchildren: Rachel Horst and husband Jon, Michelle Roemer, Joseph Roemer, Alyssa Wood, Kelsey Morrison, Summer Morrison, Isabella Wood and Colton Morrison and great-grandchildren Evelyn and Roman Horst. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville. A memorial service will immediately follow the visitation at 3pm at the funeral home with Rev. Mark Waddell officiating. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Carroll County Humane Society, 2517 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158.

I knew Jack for a brief shining time but could sense what a good man he was during that time. My condolences to everyone.

Mr. Mickey was one of our favorite patients. He always came in with a smile. We all look forward to his visits and hearing him say "Never fear Mickeys here". It breaks our heart that we will never hear those words again. We send our condolences to his family.

John is a lovely person, who will be deeply missed. I always looked for John and Moose at the retiree's bull and Oyster Roast. John would keep in contact with the members of the "Lunch Bunch" a group of retirees of BGE's Transmission Department. Before covid-1919, John would schedule a Christmas Luncheon every year at Friendly Farms, not just for the group of guys but for our wives also.
I will save a seat for John at the Bull and Oyster Roast. I am sorry to hear of your loss.
