Joseph Caricofe Obituary

Dr. Joseph H. Caricofe, 91, of Bridgewater, Virginia, crossed the finish line of his earthly life on January 21, 2023, surrounded by his beloved family. J.H. was born on December 17, 1931, to the late Rev. A. Joseph and Orpha Hess Caricofe in Luray, Virginia. He graduated from William Fleming High School in Roanoke and then received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Bridgewater College. After earning a medical degree at the Medical College of Virginia (VCU), he then completed an internship at Lancaster General Hospital. In 1958 Dr. Caricofe established a family practice in Union Bridge, Maryland providing care in that community for 44 years. His expert care in that local community also included being on the FSK High School Football roster as the on-field physician as well as being the plant physician for Lehigh Portland Cement Company. J.H. was a member of the AMA, AAFP, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. After retiring from his practice, he focused his medical care on Carroll County Hospice, as well as the residents of both Brookfield Manor and Carroll Lutheran Village. He also did volunteer work at the Westminster Free Clinic. J.H. is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Naff Caricofe, son Michael and wife Jennie of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, daughters Pam and Steve Flora of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Cyndy and Peter Larsen of Richmond, Virginia, and Carol and John White of Richmond, Virginia, 7 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 3 nephews. J.H. was predeceased by his sister, Verna C. Moore, and a niece. Along with completing 31 marathons, J.H. also enjoyed hiking, traveling, and collecting transportation tokens. After retirement, he invested time and energy in the hobby of framing, often finding old or sentimental photos and documents to frame for friends and community members. He was a devoted and active member of the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren and then became a member of the Bridgewater Church of the Brethren when they relocated in 2013. The family will host a celebration of life in Bridgewater, Virginia in early spring. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to be given in his memory to any of the following: The Joanne Grossnickle Scholarship fund (through the Union Bridge Church of the Brethren), BridgingLife, formerly Carroll Hospice, or the Forever Family fund at Bridgewater Retirement Community. Deepest Condolences to the entire Caricofe Family! Dr. Caricofe provided the best of care for my entire family all through my childhood and he set the standard very high by which I have measured all of my physicians since. No one really compares as he was not just the "town doc"! He and his family were integral members of the community and friends to all. I was blessed to be childhood friends with Carol and thus have wonderful memories of spending time with the family. Prayers of Strength for the Family!

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Caricofe for many years at Carroll Lutheran Village. He always took the time to teach the staff and was kind and caring with the residents and their families. He was a wonderful doctor.

When I arrived in Westminster, he was one of the first physicians to welcome me and we shared several years of sideline stories at FSK watching HS football. We had a warm relationship even after his retirement until his move to Bridgewater. My impression was always that of a warm hearted, truly gentle and caring man. Condolences.

Dr. Caricofe was my family's Dr. He was always very professional in treating my family. To this day I speak his name with other Doctors, and all speak very highly . I also cherished his friendship and as a neighbor. So sorry to hear of the passing of Dr Caricofe. He was our family doctor all through childhood. In fact he delivered me on Thanksgiving day 1960. He took care of my parents and siblings. Truly a good person and Doctor.

I started seeing Dr Caricofe in 1959, I was 6 years old. He took care of my parents, siblings and then my own children. I will forever be grateful for his care and compassion.
