Kenneth James Leahy, 64, of Westminster passed away peacefully on Monday, November 21, 2022, from a long illness at his home. He fought the good fight against prostate cancer and finally succumbed to the illness after 11 years. The family is grateful to the doctors at Chesapeake Urology and GBMC for the innovative treatments that prolonged his life. Born in
Miami, FL on March 18, 1958, he was the son of the late Frank E. and Joyce Spaulding Leahy. Ken spent his early years in
Ridgewood, New Jersey. The family moved to
Cockeysville, MD when Ken was entering ninth grade. He attended Dulaney High school where he met friends whom he remained close with throughout his life. He was the loving husband of Melissa Zaharis Leahy for 34 years and lived in
Westminster, MD for the majority of his married life. After graduating from The University of Maryland in 1981 with a B.S in Civil Engineering, he had a diverse career and worked on construction projects across the mid-Atlantic area. He loved the challenge of working in a new setting and gaining different work experiences. He began his career as a Project Engineer for Century Engineering in 1981. From there he worked for Bethlehem Steel Shipyard as a Project Manager and Facilities Engineer. He moved to Whiting Turner in 1987 and worked on numerous statewide projects, including initial construction of the Baltimore Central Light Rail. From Whiting Turner, Ken worked for Amtrak Railroad Contractors where he participated in the construction of the second phase of the Baltimore Light Rail project. During the last several years of his career, he worked as Vice President for Potts and Callahan until 2011, and retired from GeoConstructors, Inc as its Chief Operating Officer in 2018. He was a member of the Civil Engineer's Association and Church of the Ascension of Westminster. Ken was an avid golfer and had a passion for all aspects of the game. His favorite courses were The Creek Club in Georgia and Bayside in
Fenwick Island, DE. Ken also loved spending time with his family, traveling, gardening, and relaxing at the family beach house. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are twin sons Nicholas and Benjamin Leahy, both of Westminster and his sister Susan Kemp Leahy of Daytona, FL. A memorial celebration will be held at Church of the Ascension, 23 N. Court St., Westminster MD on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 1:00pm. The family will receive friends after the service at their home in Westminster. Interment will be private.
