Maynard Long Obituary

Wm Maynard Long of Spring Lake, NC, passed away on Fri., July 14th. He was surrounded by family as the Lord called him home. Born in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 11, 1921, he was the youngest child of Wm Mack and Bessie Bennett Long, of Landover, Maryland. Mr. Long spent the greater portion of his life in Prince George's Co., MD. He moved with his wife to Carroll Co., MD in 1994. He attended Bladensburg High School, where he participated in track events and it was at this school that he first noticed his wife-to-be, Elsie Hubert. He joined the Nat'l Guard for two years before enlisting in the Navy the summer of '42. "I wasn't yet of age, so my mother had to sign for me", he later recalled. Mr. Long was assigned to the Navy Intelligence Combat Unit at Pearl Harbor (AKA "Station Hypo") where he worked in the "basement" of the AD Bldg, assisting in the breaking of the Japanese Code. After the war, Mr. Long enrolled as a student at Moody Bible Institute, in Chicago, Ill. He married his girl in 1945, the year she graduated from Moody. Their goal was to do missionary work in China, however, the country experienced a communist revolution shortly after he graduated (1948). He began employment as a biological lab technician at the Dept. of Agriculture, USDA, in Washington, D.C. and later transferred to the Agriculture Research Center in Beltsville, MD. He retired after 40 plus years of service. His hobbies included reading, oil painting, restoring old cars and home remodeling. He occasionally guest spoke at churches and taught Bible study throughout his life. Mr. Long is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 63 years, Elsie Cordelia Hubert Long, his son, Wesley M. Long and his eldest daughter, Darlene K. Nalls, who passed away two weeks prior to her father. Surviving are three daughters, Deanna L. Anderson of Spring Lake, NC, Danette M. Byrne and Denise M. Fordyce, both of Gettysburg, PA. He leaves behind ten grandchildren, numerous great-grand- children and one great-great grandson. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 3200 Ridge Road, Westminster, MD on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

I met Mr. Long through my parents. They were good friends. I enjoyed when they came to visit because I got to know their children. Their daughter Deanna and I are still good friends. They both were a great inspiration to me.
