I remember one afternoon (a long time ago) Tad and I were trying out his new baseball bat in the park just down the street from his house on 39th street. We both were taking turns at using it that day. At some point, Mr. Joerdens came into view, returning home from work, walking along Tudor Arms Avenue. As he got near, Tad had the bat and I remember his dad looking over at us with pleasure and interest. Tad then took one last swing, which unexpectedly ended at my head. And since my attention was on Mr. Joerdens at that instant, I saw the deeply concerned look that suddenly crossed his face. In an instant he was running across Tudor Arms to get to us and offer some TLC. Honestly, my own dad wouldn't have shown more concern then Tad's dad did.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Joerdens were warm, caring parents who gave wonderful support to their own kids as well a whole group of us growing up in the 1950s and 60s. I always felt welcomed and cared for in their home, whether on 39th street or University Parkway. Thank you so much.
