Richard Shepherd Obituary

Richard Davis Shepherd, 84, of Westminster, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013.

Born Oct. 8, 1928, in Indiana Harbor, Ind., he was the son of the late Fred Glenn Shepherd and Alma Wilson Shepherd Schwarzntraub. He was the husband of Anna Mary Hart Shepherd.

He joined the Navy at the age of 17. He graduated from Indiana University, where he worked a variety of jobs to put himself through school. This included service in the Army during the Korean Conflict, where he was seriously wounded. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He especially enjoyed his position as a claims representative for Social Security, early in his career, because of the personal contacts and feeling of helping people. Before retiring, he was a member of the Social Security Administration's Senior Executive Service where, among other responsibilities, he headed a component that was responsible for the automation of all claims related processes.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are step-children Pamela Ann Spenner and husband John, of Hampstead, and John Steven Mauthe, of Littlestown, Pa.; grandchildren John Thomas "J.T.," Jessica Ashton and Kerrigan Marie Spenner; sibling Dr. R. Lee and wife Jeanne Schwarzentraub, of Dallas, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a sister, Juanita Glenn Stone.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road, Towson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael J. Roach officiating. Interment will be in Hampstead Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Humane Society of Carroll County, c/o Nicky Ratliff, 2517 Littlestown Pike, Westminster, MD 21158; or St. Bartholomew R.C. Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 448, Manchester, MD 21102.

Dick was an impressive "big brother"; brillant student, military hero, influential and important senior governmental executive! But most of all he was a fun guy to be around and to talk with.He never allowed his intellect to get in the way of his compassion and friendship. The world IS a better place because of his presence.
