Sarah M. "Penny" Colson

1941 - 2023

Sarah Mae "Penny" Colson, age 81, of Sykesville passed away on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, surrounded by her family at BridgingLife's Dove House, Westminster. She was born on August 14, 1941, in Smith County, VA to the late Raymond Edgar Cullop and Mary Ruth Atwell Cullop. She was the loving wife of Arthur Jerry Colson. Penny was a licensed practical nurse working at Springfield Hospital Center, Sykesville from 1959 to 1967. She then stayed home to raise her daughters. Once her daughters were grown returned to nursing at Fairhaven, Sykesville for several years. Penny had a drive for knowledge and was an avid reader. She was a very spiritual person and studied the Bible in depth. Surviving in addition to her husband are daughter and son-in-law Carla Camille Colson and David Buehrle of New Market; brothers J.W. Cullop, Eugene Cullop and Roscoe Cullop and sisters Dottie Meadows and Jolacy Roebuck; grandsons Bryan Martin Ridgely and Benjamin Arthur Ridgely; granddaughter Caitlin Colson Principe Fraser and step-grandchildren Jacqueline Velnosky, Rachael Doherty and Hannah Zegarra. She was predeceased by her daughter Donna Marie Colson and sisters Charlotte and Pat. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11am on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, 6416 Sykesville Road, Sykesville where a funeral service will follow at 11am. Interment will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, in the name of Penny Colson and Donna Marie Colson.
