Bernadine Elbert, 88

Bernadine Marie (Batchelder) Elbert died peacefully at home on Aug. 17, 2024. Bernadine was born to Howard and Helene (Brackelsberg) Batchelder on July 24, 1936 in Blue Creek Bay, ID. A year later they moved to Coeur d'Alene, ID. She was the oldest of 4 children.



Bernadine attended IHM Academy for 12 yrs and graduated in 1954.

In October of 1958 she met William (Bill) Hanses, they married and had 3 children Janet, David, and Mary. In December of 1965 Bill died of cancer while they were living in Seattle. Bernadine then moved back to Spokane with her 3 young children.



In the Catholic Singles Club in 1968 she met Vincent Elbert, a widower with a small son, Scott. Vince and Bernie fell in love and were married in 1970. Vince adopted her 3 children in 1974.



Bernie love people. She particularly enjoyed visiting with the elderly. Her hobbies were singing, dancing, sending all types of cards, writing letters, and talking on the phone. She also enjoyed watching her 3 grandchildren, Leah Rediske, Cami Jones Bindler, and Anthony Elbert grow into adults.



Her love, hugs, and kisses were always there for her family and friends.



She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Bill Hanses, infant daughter Mary Ellen Hanses, and son Scott Elbert. Bernie is survived by her husband Vince, daughter Janet (Jim) Lafever of Cheney, son David Elbert (companion Trena) of Millwood, daughter Mary Mullen of Spokane and Debi Morgan who was like another daughter, sister Joan (Stan) Johnson of Spokane, brother Richard (Judy) Batchelder of Spokane Valley, brother Gary (Gladys) Batchelder of St. Maries, ID, her 3 grandchildren, nieces and great nieces, nephews, great nephews, many friends and a big thank you to the staff at Brighton Court Memory Care Unit for taking such great care of her.



The Viewing is Tuesday, August 27, 5:00 p.m. followed by the Rosary, 7:00 p.m.at Hennessey Valley Funeral Home, 1315 N Pines Rd., Spokane Valley, WA. The Funeral Mass is Wednesday, August 28, at 11:00 a.m. followed by the reception at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams Rd., Spokane Valley. The Committal begins at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 17825 E. Trent Ave., Spokane Valley. To leave condolences for the family, visit www.hennesseyvalley.com.
