David Root Obituary

David Root, 65

Master Sergeant David Patrick "Dave" Root, 65, passed away on April 18, 2025, in Spirit Lake, Idaho. He is preceded in death by his father Robert R Root and his brother, Robert (Bobby) M Root. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Wickstrom, his wife, Denise Root, and many more beloved family members. Born on July 14, 1959, in Spokane, Washington, David lived a life defined by service, courage, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

David dedicated his life to serving his country with distinction. He began his military career in the United States Coast Guard, where he served for six years before transitioning to the United States Air Force. Over the course of two decades in the Air Force, David rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and earned numerous service awards for his exemplary work as both a recruiter and medic. His dedication and excellence were so prolific that he ran out of wall space in his cherished "War Room," where he proudly displayed his many commendations.

Among his many acts of valor, David is recognized in Andy Brown's book "Warnings Unheeded" for his heroic actions during the tragic mass shooting at Fairchild Air Force Base in 1994. His bravery that day saved countless lives and left an enduring legacy that continues to impact generations. The depth of his courage and commitment to others extended far beyond that single event, his entire military career was marked by selflessness and a steadfast sense of duty.

Outside of his military accomplishments, David found joy and peace in nature. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, camping, and simply observing wildlife from his backyard.

David also held strong ties to the Masonic community. He was a Lifetime Member of both the Creswell Lodge in Oregon and the Spirit Lake Lodge in Idaho. He served as Past Master of the Creswell Lodge. This Masonic bond was one he shared with pride alongside his son Rob and father Ray Wickstrom.

David's life was one of purpose and profound impact. His legacy is etched not only into military history but also into the hearts of those who knew him, through acts of bravery, quiet moments spent outdoors, and unwavering dedication to service.

May his memory bring comfort to all who were touched by his remarkable life.

Family, removed by miles and circumstances is still family. I remember your birth, and smile at that memory.

I served under Dave at Fairchild. He was not only a friend but a mentor. To this day my kids have all heard their mom tell them a Dave story. He will never truly be gone because he will last in my heart forever. My condolences go out to his family as they grieve his passing.

I will remember Dave as I passed by his house everyday as I walked to work at the high school. He always had a friendly greeting for me and sometimes we would chat for a few minutes. I will miss seeing him out mowing or working in his garden or walking to his mailbox. My last memory of him will be the day I saw him walking to his mailbox in the cold weather in shorts. I remember telling him he was silly. That memory will bring a smile to my face. Rest In Peace , Dave. You're in the arms of the angels.
