GARY ROOT Obituary
Gary voluntarily enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and served until he was wounded in 1970. Upon returning from Vietnam, he served as a police officer for the Millerton and Daggett area. He also volunteered for the Millerton Fire Department. Gary was a member of Millerton United Methodist Church, sang in the choir, and helped with church renovations. He organized the annual Memorial Day parade for a few years, coached Little League, and was a Boy Scout Master. For over 30 years, Gary worked in the agricultural industry and was highly regarded as a small engine mechanic for Agway, Nel's Tractor, and Quality Inc. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing on his brother's softball team, and working/tracking family genealogy.
Gary is survived by his sons, Jason (Rachael) Root of West Palm Beach, Fla.; Jeffrey (Tammy) Root, and Anthony (Casey) Root of Millerton; four grandchildren, Xander Marcusky, Nicholas Root, Emily Root, and Jasmine Root; three brothers, Steven Root of Milan, Clifford (Jackie) Root of Lawrenceville, and Russell (Lori) Root of Tioga; a sister, Elaine (Thomas) Rupp of Elmira, N.Y.; and sister-in-law, Barbara Root of Horseheads, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, David Root; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Friends and family are invited to call on Friday, February 6, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Buckheit Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Inc. 637 S. Main St. Mansfield. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Millerton Fire Department, 16 North Rd., Millerton, PA 16936. Burial will take place in Alder Run Cemetery at a later date. www.buckheitfcandcrematory.com
