Edith Schaefer Obituary

Edith Margaret Schaefer died on August 9, 2016, at the age of 97 at Amerisist Assisted Living in Louisa, Virginia.
She was born April 8, 1919, in Rochester, New York.
She was predeceased by her parents, Edward P. Schaefer and Hazel E. Huth Schaefer, both of New Orleans, Louisana; Edith's beloved brother, Edward J. Schaefer (1922 - 2007), her only sibling, was also born in Rochester, New York and died in Maryland. Neither Edith, nor "Eddie' married and neither had children.
Edith is survived by her uncle, John (Johnny) Huth's surviving 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, most of the greater New Orleans area.
Edith was devoted to her extended family and enjoyed following the lives of her cousins and their families. She was especially fond of her aunt, Margaret Schaefer, who taught her needle work at a young age.
Edith proudly enlisted in the Women's Army Corps in 1944, where she served as a private for the duration of the war. After the war, Edith held a variety of administrative positions and continued to work into her 80s. She lived and worked in Maryland most of her adult life, except for a few years in the 1960s when she relocated to New Orleans to be closer to her extended family.
In her retirement years she resided in central Virginia, most recently in a rustic log cabin in Orange. Edith was a strong, independent, frugal, no-nonsense, tender-hearted woman with a great sense of humor whose smile could light up a room. She loved nature, especially birds, and enjoyed hiking on her property. She was always mindful of those less fortunate than herself.
In keeping with Edith's wishes, private funeral arrangements have been entrusted with Preddy Funeral Home in Orange, Virginia.
