Carol Yonan Obituary

Carol Dixon Yonan
September 16, 1938 - April 10, 2022
State College, Pennsylvania - Carol Dixon Yonan of State College, PA, passed peacefully at her home on Sunday, April 10, from complications from lung cancer.
On September 16, 1938, Carol was born in Washington, DC, to Arthur and Elaine Dixon of Alexandria, VA. She attended Mary Washington College before completing her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Virginia in 1960. Subsequently, she moved to Manhattan with her college girlfriends to begin her career as a pediatric nurse.
Carol was a loyal friend, especially treasuring her nursing school friendships and their annual spring trip to NC's Outer Banks. She had an adventurous spirit and traveled all over Europe as a young adult. In her mom/grandmother years, she traveled wherever her kids and grandchildren lived and loved to adventure with them. Carol was a Master Gardener (Purdue University). She was a hard-working member of the Boalsburg and the Westport, CT Garden Clubs, making it her job to dig up plants, give them away, or donate them for annual garden club sales.
In knowing Carol, you understood that her faith in Jesus was the compass that guided her through good days and hard days. She was a part of Bible Study Fellowship or Community Bible Study in every community she lived. In State College, she became part of the MOPS (Mother of Preschoolers) community as a Mentor Mom. She cherished this role, being the hands and feet of Jesus, praying for young moms and their sweet children, and making and delivering meals at the drop of a hat. Most importantly, her heart overflowed with grace and forgiveness, an outpouring of God's love for her. She was a member of Oakwood Presbyterian Church in State College.
She will be missed immeasurably by her three children and their families, Melissa Yonan & Mark Horn of State College, PA, Tracie & Jay Miller of Napa, CA, and Matt & Amanda Yonan of Littleton, CO. Thirteen Grandchildren: Madeleine, Dixon, Abigail, Jonah & Fitsum Yonan, Hannah & Haley Miller, Christian, Chelsey Allen, Kyle, Chloe, Claire & Caroline Horn, and nine great-grandchildren. And her siblings: John & Carolyn Dixon (Philadelphia, PA) and Virginia Sue Dixon & Beck Horne (Fletcher, NC). And last but not least, her dog Oliver.
A Celebration of Life service will be on Tuesday, May 17 at 10:30 am at First Presbyterian Church in Bellefonte. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Carol's name to the Scholarship Fund at Camp Brookwoods, Deer Run, and Moose River Outpost, where she touched the lives of so many young campers as their sewing instructor and mentor over the last decade of her life.
Gift to: "Christian Camps and Conferences, Inc.", 34 Camp Brookwoods Rd, Alton, NH 03809, www.christiancamps.net/donate, memo: Carol Yonan Scholarship

Carol was a wonderful neighbor here in State College. I will miss her wave as she tended to her beautiful flower garden or when she took Oliver for his walk. My heart goes out to her family as I share in their sorrow. My deepest sympathy, Carol Bergamaschi
