David Maser Obituary

David Lawrence Maser May 9, 1950 - September 16, 2011 David Lawrence Maser, age 61, of Pennsylvania Furnace, entered into heaven on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011. He was born May 9, 1950, in Johnstown, the son of the late Clarence Maser and of Leona Constable, who survives in Johnstown. David was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dianne Martinovich Maser, and by his daughter, Amanda. He is survived by his son, Zachary D. Maser, of Boalsburg; three sisters, Sandra Bennett, of Daytona, Fla., Beverly Maser-Ellis, of Johnstown and Leslie Maser, of Johnstown; and two brothers, Michael Maser, of Daytona Beach, Fla. and Gregory Maser, of Swanton, Ohio. David graduated from Westmont Hilltop High School in 1968 and The Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1970 and embarked on a career as a graphic designer. The family moved to State College in 1984. David was art director for Commercial Printing and then migrated to Penn State Outreach Marketing from 1993 to 2008. He was visual arts coordinator of the Johnstown Area Arts Council and also served as its vice president. For many years he sketched portraits and caricatures in numerous arts and craft events throughout Pennsylvania, including the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Through holidays, birthday parties, drawings, and homemade toys and games, his children were fortunate to grow up with his unique creativity and imagination. David was a dedicated and loving husband and father. In addition to his wife Dianne, he founded ChildHope Inc. in 1990, a non-profit organization created to help children with life-threatening and chronic illnesses and their families. ChildHope provided services and activities to almost 200 families. Before that, David and Dianne became contacts for the Make- A-Wish foundation, involving them with coordinating wishes for children and their families. Although he suffered many ailments including leukemia, those who knew him were amazed and inspired by his courage, his attitude, and his strength. He touched many lives, and his memory will continue to do so for years to come. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. today, Sept. 19, 2011, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at the State College Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Joel Blunk officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Dianne and Amanda Maser to the Brain Tumor Association, 2720 River Road, Des Plaines, IL 60018, website: http://www.abta.org/ Arrangements by Koch Funeral Home, State College. When I was very young, I looked up to David. He was older than me, handsome, funny, talented, had his own great big room in the attic and his own clubhouse, His first home (at my Aunt's house in Johnstown) had evidences of his awsome and God given ability to draw. In later years, it was evident that he also had a heart for the Lord and because of that, he touched so many people with his life. I will miss him. Cousin Cindy

David worked for a educational publishing company in Johnstown with my husband, Bob Alwine starting in 1970. They formed a close friendship because (they both claimed) they shared a "unique" sense of humor. We quickly became fast friends with David and Dianne. We spent much time together as our and their children were being born and raised. We shared many good times as well as the trying ones. Both David and Dianne were always very caring and supportive with our struggles, while they had so many of their own. Of course, through it all, Bob and David always found a way to laugh. Our children were close with Dianne and David - even though David played some ghastly Halloween pranks on them. All of our lives were truly made better having been able to share in the lives of David, Dianne, Amanda, and Zachary.
We will miss David immensely and always celebrate his life.
Zachary, you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
With sincere sympathy,
Bob, Judie, Camille, and Bobby Alwine.

I didn't know Dave as well as most but, he touched my heart just the same. I knew "Mase", as he was known while playing trivia, from a local tavern. He recanted many stories and recollections to myself and others. Dave impressed me with his knowledge and love of sports. I was always very happy to spend an hour or so playing trivia and chatting with Mase. I will miss him greatly. My deepest condolences to his loved ones.

Zack and Maser Family,

“Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”

David will be missed tremendously. I will never forget Child Hope and the time and determination David and Dianne put into running the organization. I lost touch with David only to re-connect several years ago. I feel blessed to have known and re-connect with him. I will miss David's sense of humor and visiting with him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I will never forget all of the wonderful times I had with David while I was growing up. David's expertise in art was absolutely awesome to me; he taught me a lot about the right way to draw things, but no matter how much I tried I could never come close to his ability. One thing we had a lot of fun doing was drawing in the streets near his house in Westmont. We would often fill out all the streets around an entire block. I feel really sorry for his family. Please accept my condolences.

David was such an amazing man. I met him when he was bringing Amanda for her blood work and treatment for her cancer. Although it was a trying time for him and he eventually became one of my regular people for labs he never failed to ask about how we where. So compassionate and corcerned for so many others when he went through so many trials himself. He brought us one of Amanda's drawings that remains in the State College lab that is often admired by many that fequent the lab. He will always be remembered for his soft voice and beautiful smile, he will be greatly missed but I know that his struggles and pain are no more. May God continue to bless all those he touched.

There are not enough words in the English language to give justice in describing David Maser. In my younger years, he always had a special place in my heart for his humor and creativity. As I grew up, I saw how his humor and faith helped him to withstand so much, and he inspired me every step of the way. I remember coming for a couple days to help him care for Diane. I was in awe of his strength and faith. As his challenges continued, David was always able to find the humor in things and make everyone around him smile and feel comfortable; and be better able to handle their own challenges. I will certainly miss his smile, his strength, and his humor. Blessings to Zach and the entire family and numerous friends that knew and loved David. Our lives are certainly better for having him in it. He will be sorely missed.

Dear Maser Family,
For more than a decade, Dave was my Penn State colleague and friend. I will remember him for his compassion, endurance and bravery through the toughest of circumstances. Despite the hardships, his creativity and sense of whimsy never dimmed. He created a series of Nittany Lion cartoons for a Penn State program I managed and the marketing won an award. The first time I saw the illustrations, I laughed out loud. His playfulness always came through in his lion cartoons. Fond memories of Dave will remain in my heart.
