Fraser Kershaw Obituary

Fraser Hart Kershaw August 22, 1948 - May 26, 2007 Fraser Hart Kershaw died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 26, 2007. He was undisputably one State College's most creative individuals. He was born Aug. 22, 1948, in Key West, Fla. Fraser was raised in State College, where he touched the lives of everyone he met and anyone who was lucky enough to encounter his fantastic displays of artwork. One page can hardly describe him justly and those who knew him will agree wholeheartedly, for he was a pioneer of astonishing originality when it came to his art, which encompassed his home, landscaping, vehicles, clothing, and most of all his wonderful, loving un-judgmental personality. Everyone who knew Fraser admired him for his uniqueness, his zest for life, and the care-giving ability which he extended to everyone he met. He also had a great ability to make a person smile. He enjoyed all types of music — especially soul. His dancing ability would rank with any professional dancer's. Fraser Kershaw was a wonderful father, sportsmen and hunter. He was very active in the community and will be truly missed by all, especially his biological son, Fraser, and his foster children, whom he loved unconditionally. Fraser graduated from State College Area High School in 1967 and attended Williamsport Tech in 1967 for sign design. He attended Penn State University. After traveling the world from Australia to the Caribbean, he enlisted in the Army 60-71 and served in the Vietnam War with the 45th Med Co (Air Amb) US ARV. He evacuated dead and wounded soldiers for a year and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air crewman wings, and the Air Medal. In the 1970s Fraser was instrumental in the revitalization of the State College Area Jaycees. He served as vice president for the State College High School Alumni Association. He contributed to many committees, including the Centre County Junior Miss Scholarship Pageant, for which he designed and constructed many pageant stage sets. He created artwork and floats for multiple State College events, parades, and arts festivals. Fraser was an installation artist and a master of relational aesthetics. Some of his most memorable creations were his pumpkin pole projects, which drew national attention. He designed a 150-pound Nittany Lion made out of prickly burdock, and a multi-sized interchangeable sculpture of heart shapes when put together created a giant lion face. He was a designer of many unforgettable signature kites and cars. Fraser was constantly in the local and national papers and magazines for his creative endeavors, which he did out of love for people, art, nature and State College. Fraser won the very first Grange Fair smashup derby in the car he designed "The Grange Grinder." Fraser was a natural athlete and sportsman; he was one of the first people to ride a snowboard on Tussey Mountain and avidly continued to do so at the age of 58. He was always in peak physical condition his entire life, which allowed him to excel in hunting, hang-gliding, roller skating, body building, salsa dancing, unicycling, and motorcycle riding (he owned a 1948 Indian). For many years he held the record for climbing Mount Nittany, making the trip in all types of weather. Fraser Hart Kershaw was an amazing, unique and irreplaceable individual. His passing will end an era in State College that no one will ever forget. Fraser was the son of the late Robert E. Kershaw and Joanne Hart Kershaw. He is survived by two brothers, Rock Kershaw, of Raleigh, N.C. and his wife, Vive, and their children, Matthew and Katherine; and Carter Kershaw, of State College. He is also survived by his adult children, a daughter and five sons, Lisa, Fraser Hart Kershaw II and his wife Brittany, Stan and his wife, Kate, and their son Dalton, Scott and his wife Nicole with children, Andrew, Nick, and Courtney, Steve and children Devin and Ashley, Eliot, their mother Lorrie, and his atomic dog, Stubby. Memorial contributions may be made in remembrance of Fraser Kershaw to Centre County Children and Youth Services, 420 Holmes St. Suite 201, Bellefonte PA 16823 (phone number 814-355-6755). Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2007, at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2, 2007, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, with full military honors accorded. Following the service there will be a gathering for family friends and loved ones. The location will be announced.

Never forgot the time we met when I was in Vietnam hospital in 1970. You were a Helicopter medic and I was a patient. Rest in Peace my Battle Buddy.

Fraser's father worked with my father, so our families often got together when we were growing up in the 1960s. I and my brothers, Jim and Bill, absolutely idolized Fraser and his brothers, Carter and Rock. Despite being several years older than we were, they always cooked up creative games and amazing adventures when we got together, giving us precious memories for a lifetime. Fraser's positive impact on us might be one small thing compared to the many major accomplishments in his life, but he surely touched me and my brothers deeply and permanently.

I will indeed, miss Fraser. As the obituary says, Fraser was very UNjudgmental. He accepted the "least among us." That's what Jesus would have wanted. Jesus dwelt among sinners. Fraser accepted people just for who they were. He never looked down at anyone. He was able to look past people's shortfalls. I will miss him for that reason. May God bless the family members with the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.

I was so sorry to hear of Frasier's death. I am a missionary in Haiti but maintain a home in State College. Frasier has seen to the lawn and snow clearing at the house since the mid 1980's. He was a student in my Father's Science class, so was a long time friend of the family. When I would return to State College, he always made time to ask about my work in Haiti. He was reliable, conscientious, hard working and friendly. His grace and patience and generosity made him a pleasure to work with. He will be hard, if not impossible to replace. I pray that you all will find comfort in his faith and in the many friends and fond memories shared here and in other ways.

I remember Fraser as one of the really great guys in high school; he was always fun to be around. I last saw him in the late 1970’s when I had returned to State college to attend PSU, after serving in the Air Force. My prayers are with you in this time of loss and sadness at his passing.

My Husband and I met Fraser in January 2007 while moving into our house. We had the privilege of sharing the same driveway which lead to some interesting conversations. He and my Husband exchanged their war stories since both flew on hueys. He always put a smile on our faces! We miss seeing his white truck and miss seeing him perfecting people's yards. We only knew him for a short time, but he left a mark in our hearts and lives. He was a fascinating and intriguing individual. Our prayers go out to his family and friends.

I met Fraser in the summer of '66 after moving to PA from MA. While we didn't travel in the same circles, we became friends; and whenever we ran into each other we shared an esoteric appreciation for numerous artistic, ethical and work-related things. I saw Fraser only five or six times, by chance in State College, between 1968 and the fall of 2004 - and regret not having seen him since then. I feel a great loss. No matter how much time passed, every time we ran into each other he was gracious and friendly, and acted as if no time at all had passed. He was one of the good ones. I extend my sympathy to all family members for your loss.

I grew up with Fraser and his brothers. As an adult, I knew his Father as a neighbor and learned how proud he was of all his sons. I saw Fraser frequently as he tended his clients lawns in the summer and sidewalks and driveways in the winter. He always had a kind word. He lived a varied and good life. I will miss my friend. May he rest in peace.

Dear family,
As you know, for many, many years Fraser has taken care of the numerous plants in my Florida Room and small greenhouse when I was away. He did this with loving care. He also amiably helped me with outdoor odd jobs. I am so grateful for all his help and friendship. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Frazer was a close friend of our son Hebron. We were always fascinated by the stories of his extraordinary creativity.
Unfortunately we never really knew Fraser personally until two weeks ago when he visited us in our apartment. We had a most delightful conversation and were shocked to hear the sad news of his death. We had so looked forward to seeing him again.
He touched many lives and must leave a huge void in the hearts of his friends. With sadness, Hal and Stevie White

Fraser's Family,

I was shocked to learn of Fraser's passing. For many years he has been taking care of our landscaping chores at Bayfield Court. He was always scurrying while mowing, pruning, mulching, or whatever he saw that he felt needing tending. We had several conversations about herb growing and you could always be sure he would wave and smile as he continued on with his work. We will all greatly miss this truly wonderful person and extend our sympathies to his family.
