Joel Balogh Obituary

Joel Balogh March 23, 1930 July 13, 2013 Joel Balogh, age 83, of Landenberg, passed away on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at his home. He was born March 23, 1930 in Kingston. He graduated in the Honor Society of Kingston High School's 1948 class. He served in the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician and a nuclear technician from 1948 to 1955. He attended Penn State University, where he met his wife, whom he married in 1959. He received a BS in Physics in 1959; later he earned an MS in Astronomy and an MS in Electrical Engineering. He was a lifetime member of the Penn State Alumni Association and of the IEEE. He was employed as an Electrical Engineer at HRB Singer in State College from 1958 to 1969 and at Penn State in the College of Engineering from 1969 to 1980. He and his wife raised two sons in the State College area, where he participated in the Nittany Amateur Radio Club and the Central PA Orchid Society and was a soloist in the choir and a member of the church council of Grace Lutheran Church. In 1981, he moved to Delaware to head the Instrumentation Service Center for UD's College of Engineering. In 1985, he became a full-time instructor at DelTech where he taught robotics, electronics and related subjects. He retired in 1996, to spend more time on interests in amateur radio, square dancing, orchids and travel. He served as Treasurer and in other offices for the DE Orchid Society, the Pen-Del Square Dance District, the Two by Fours Square Dance Club and his neighborhood Civic Association. Articles that he wrote for the national amateur radio magazine QST were featured on their covers. From 1996 until his death he was a Delaware Master Gardener, teaching beginner orchid workshops among other activities. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, John and his wife, Jean with their children, Anne and Matthew, of State College; and by his son, Bruce, of Wilmington, Del.; as well as his sister, Ann and his brother James, both of New Jersey. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul and Timothy; and his daughter-in-law, Sharon Railing. A celebration of his life will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Food Bank of Delaware, 14 Garfield Way, Newark, DE 19713; or to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research, 110 Old Possum Hollow Road, Newark, DE 19711. Joel was one of my friends during the several years that I was in the Nittany Amateur Radio Club . I have fond memories of K3HKK and of our actvities while I studied at Penn State. He was a fine example for other operators in the ham community.
