Kathryn Sherman Obituary

Kathryn Sherman

February 20, 1924 - September 8, 2023

State College, Pennsylvania - Kate Sherman passed peacefully at her home in Foxdale Village on September 8, 2023, surrounded by a loving family of her children, family friends, and the wonderfully devoted and caring nursing staff of Darlington House North. She was 99 [and a half!] years old.

Born to Harry Magee Hendrickson and Kathryn White [nee Thomson, aka "The P-less Thomsons"] in 1924, Kathryn Abbie became the youngest of three sisters, joining June and Dorothy, 12 and 10 years older. Kate's mother died when she was 12; her father when she was 18. She and Carl Wiseheart Sherman met at Asbury Park HS in 1939, Kate's freshman and Carl's sophomore year. In 1942 Carl left his undergraduate studies at Penn State University to join the US Navy, and he and Kate were married in 1943. Their three-day honeymoon [thanks to the loan of a Hendrickson family friend's car and a wedding gift of gas rations from the Sherman family's milkman] was a whirlwind of the Plaza Hotel in NYC, State College's Autoport Motel, and ultimately, the Nittany Lion Inn. After nearly 70 years of marriage, love, laughs and adventures, Carl died in 2013.

Kate's survived by all three "kids" and two spouses, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Dixon lives in AK with wife Cathy, and Peter [born at Willowbank Hospital, Bellefonte] and wife Mary, live in MA. Sally resides in State College. In addition to Carl, Kate was predeceased by her granddaughter, Rachel Wiseheart Sherman, and Sally's husband, Mark Armagost.

The Sherman family would like to thank the many Foxdale employees who cared for Kate and Carl so kindly from their time in the cottages to the move to Assisted Living--Groundskeeping, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Nursing, Dr. Rodney Sepich, and the Dining staff of both The Cafe and Bistro-–many of whom became real friends of the family.

Katy's dry wit, humor, tenderness and love will be so missed. A lifelong reader and volunteer at Schlow Public Library for over 25 years and resident of Foxdale since the mid-1990's, any memorial donations to Schlow Public and /or Foxdale Village would celebrate her wonderful spirit.

Kate and Carl Sherman were like second parents to me, I will never forget all that they have done for me. She had a sharp wit and such a loving presence, and she was an excellent cook! Starting with living next door to them, through my lasting friendship with their daughter Sally, Kate and Carl have been a major force in my life. I love you both dearly Mr and Mrs Sherman, you will be missed. All my love to Sally, Dix and Pete.

What a lovely person Kate was. She welcomed us into her house decades ago and while we were there to buy (and did), we remained friends through the years and got together with Carl from time to time. I especially liked her support of Schlow Library. It's a story I tell from time to time.
