William Rumberger

William A. Rumberger September 8, 1925 September 17, 2015 William A. Rumberger, 90, of State College, died Thursday, September 17, 2015 at the Atrium in State College. He was born September 8, 1925, in Erie, PA, a son of the late Sherman and Edith Carlson Rumberger. In September of 1948 he married Helen A. Drennan who survives at The Village at Penn State at State College, PA. Following high school, he began working on his bachelor's degree; but went into the U. S. Navy during World War II. Following his tour in the Navy, he went back to Penn State and finished his degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948. During his World War II service he completed Midshipman School and earned the rank of Ensign (D) 1. He earned an American Theatre Ribbon, a World War II Victory Medal, and an Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon; serving on the USS Duncan and the USS Niblack. Mr. Rumberger was a member of Mount Nittany United Methodist Church in Lemont, and a member of the Penn State Alumni Association. He enjoyed attending Penn State sports events, playing golf and bowling with a retirees bowling league. During his years as an Electrical Engineer, he worked as a manager of systems engineering and construction for Niagara Mohawk Power Company in New York. Surviving Mr. Rumberger in addition to his wife are two daughters Kathy Rumberger of Norfolk, VA, and Jean Campbell (Mark) of Central Square, NY; two sons, Robert Rumberger (Judith) of Winter Springs, FL, and David Rumberger (Gloria) of East Stroudsburg, PA; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one sister Rachel "Charlie" Whiting of Jacksonville, AK. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Jane and Shirley. Friends will be received from 6 - 8 pm Monday, September 21, 2015, at Mark D. Heintzelman Funeral and Cremation Service, 1034 Benner Pike, State College, PA; the funeral will be at 11am Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Mount Nittany United Methodist Church, 1500 E. Branch Road, State College, PA, with the Reverend Carl Hill officiating. Burial, with military honors, will be in Centre County Memorial Park, 1032 Benner Pike, State College, PA.
