Sara Dargan Williamson

Sara Dargan Williamson DARLINGTON, SC - Sara Dargan Williamson died on September 25, 2013, at her home at Oaklyn in Darlington County. She was the widow of B. Frank Williamson, a well-known Darlington County farmer. Born on September 4, 1912 in Effingham, South Carolina, she was the daughter of Benton DuBose Dargan and Mildred Ervin Dargan. After graduating from Winthrop College in 1933, Mrs. Williamson married Mr. Williamson on November 24, 1934. Mrs. Williamson lived most of her life in Darlington County at their Oaklyn home where she raised their seven children with calm strength and patient wisdom. She was active in St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. Her interest in literature and history led her to be a long standing and contributing member of Over the Teacups, The Old Homestead Club, John McIver Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the National Society of Colonial Dames of America. Her love for flowers of all types and her devotion in caring for them reflected in her flower gardens at Oaklyn, her membership in the Palmetto Garden Club, and her love for seeking out and collecting wild flowers wherever she travelled. She also cherished her summers at Pawley's Island with her husband, children, and grandchildren and often gathered with her sisters and cousins for house parties. Mrs. Williamson is survived by six of her seven children, Benjamin Franklin Williamson (Ann) of Darlington, SC; Edwin Dargan Williamson (Kathe) of Washington, DC; Thomas Bright Williamson of Darlington, SC; Keith Symmers Williamson (Caroline) of Hartsville, SC; Isabel Symmers Williamson Smith (Stephen) of Camden, SC; and Benton DuBose Williamson (Elisabeth) of Columbia, SC and by son-in-law William Milton ("Bill") Rambo (Lydia) of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Her eldest child, Sara Dargan Williamson Rambo died in 1982 and her husband B. Frank Williamson died in 1984. She is survived by 21 grandchildren many of whom traveled and spent considerable time with her and benefited from her wisdom and grace. She is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Williamson is survived by one sister, Frances Dargan Clarkson of Sumter, SC. Her other siblings were E. Ervin Dargan of Darlington, SC, Mildred ("Happy") Welch Harvley of Kingstree, SC, Elizabeth ("Bess") Barron of Rock Hill, SC and Edwina Boatwright of Camden, SC. The Williamson family is most thankful for the loving care and faithful attention given to Mrs. Williamson by Martha Langston, Mary Ervin Kate Huggins, Kathy Sabo, Mary Lyles and McLeod Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice or to St Matthews Episcopal Church, 210 South Main Street, Darlington, SC. Services will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, September 28 at St Matthews Episcopal Church, 210 South Main Street, Darlington, with burial in Grove Hill Cemetery directed by Belk Funeral Home. The family will welcome friends and family at her home at 310 Oaklyn Road, Darlington, on Friday afternoon and after the services on Saturday.
