Alice Berman Obituary

Alice Hulbert Berman
Ms. Berman, who resided at Southminster in Charlotte, was born November 21, 1911 and died July 12, 2006.
Alice, daughter of Harry and Ethel Hulbert, grew up in the Pocono Mountains near Swiftwater, PA and graduated from Westminster Choir College in 1933, now Westminster Choir College of Rider University. She married Michael E. Berman and was the Choir Director at the First Presbyterian Church in Trenton, NJ.
Ms. Berman was called to Charlotte in 1943 as the first Minister of Music at Myers Park Baptist Church. In a few years its music program grew into a graded choral system of hundreds of singers from the age of four to eighty-four.
In 1953, Ms. Berman founded the Charlotte Choral Society, which is known now as Carolina Voices. She was one of the masterminds of the original Singing Christmas Tree and became its founding director. She led performances for the show's first quarter of a century, which began in December 1956 in the then new Ovens Auditorium. The Tree's annual programs brought lustre and national attention to the arts in Charlotte. Ms. Berman's choral work was noted for its artistic integrity as her talent and dedication brought her choirs to the highest level of professionalism.
Ms. Berman was preceded by her husband, Michael, in 1970 and her sister, Jane Hulbert, of Cresco, PA, in 2001.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 27, at 2:00 PM at Myers Park Baptist Church at 1900 Queens Rd.
Memorial contributions may be made to the music program at Myers Park Baptist Church, Carolina Voices at 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC, 28207; or Westminster Choir College of Rider University, 101 Walnut Lane, Princeton, NJ 08540.
Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.

To the family of Ms. Berman, I never personally met her but I am grateful that she started what ended up being Carolina Voices which gave an opportunity for me to do what I love to do and that is sing. My condolences to your family at this time. Yours truly, Micki Reid

Mrs. Berman gave many the oppertunity to learn the joy of singing. I had the joy of singing in the Charlotte Girls Choral in the '60 which she directed. From the time I was 11 untill I was 18, I like many other fortunate girls developed skills and joys of singing in a high quality choral group. She has always held a special place in my heart and always will. She was a very special person.

I was never lucky enough to have sung under Ms Berman, but I am lucky enough to have benefited from her drive, dedication, and dream. I am in my 25th year as a member of Carolina Voices - formerly The Charlotte Choral Society. I had the opporunity to sing with a number of members who did sing for Ms. Berman, and with some who where there at the beginning when it was started. Her legacy lives on, strong and proud, and bringing music to new generations of Carolinians.

Both my daughter ( as a student) and l have the most wonderful memories of learning more about the wonders of singing under such a leader. I treasure the time I was privvy to her leadership and influence. She was a true lady in all of her endeavors.
