Andrew Claytor Obituary

Andrew Gordon Claytor II CHATHAM, VA - Andrew Gordon Claytor II, known as Andy to most of us and Brother Redneck to his Riders In Recovery Brothers, of 1601 Double Bridge Road, Chatham, VA, peacefully went to be with the Lord in Heaven, Wednesday, July 31, 2013, after a battle with liver failure. Andy was born August 28, 1953, in Texarkana, Texas; raised in Charlotte, NC; and graduated from North Mecklenburg High School. He owned his own business - Handy Andy - providing contracting services. Andy was a huge advocate for organ donation having received two organ transplants - a liver on January 18, 1995, from a gracious donor family and a kidney recently on February 1, 2012, from his sister, Tracye Gilleland. Having the transplants enabled him to travel the world; participate in US, Canadian and World Transplant Olympic Games; raise awareness about organ donation; and demonstrate to all the benefits of organ donation. Andy donated all medals won in these events to Donor Families - showing his genuine appreciation for the gift of life they had so graciously given to him and so many others. He encouraged all Transplant Olympic participants to do the same. Andy started the Carolina Liver Association to give support and encouragement to others awaiting transplants to "just hang in there". Andy was a member of Riders In Recovery, a motorcycle club comprised of a brotherhood of men living and riding clean and sober; supporting each other in their recovery; contributing to the community and enjoying life. On July 16, Andy celebrated 27 years of sobriety. Andy was a member of Hollywood Baptist Church in Chatham, Virginia. He was also a Mason and member of Pittsylvania Lodge No. 24 A.F. & A. M. Andy was the son of Andrew Gordon Claytor and Jean Gardner Baber, who pre-deceased him. He was married to Sandra Hipp and had three children, Aura Elizabeth Claytor, Andrew (Drew) Gordon Claytor III and William Rian Claytor, all of Charlotte, NC. He moved to Chatham, VA about 10 years ago and married Mary Chamblin Nuckols Claytor and was stepfather to Lydia Ellen Nuckols Bowers and husband, Bradlee Bowers, of Danville, VA, and Julia Grace Nuckols of the residence. Andy is also survived by his sister, Tracye Claytor Gilleland and husband, Troy Gilleland (Gil), of Peachtree City, GA; his sister, Teresa (Terri) Claytor Nunn and husband, Dale Nunn, of Pfafftown, NC; his granddaughter, Mikayla Paige Rubright; his grandson, Xander Bowers; his niece, Molly Nunn; his nephews, Adam Nunn and Jaime Pfefferkorn; his "adopted" son, Nathan Tesh; and his "brother," Tom Miller. Andy's "family" reaches to the far corners of the world. He was loved by so many. Visitation will be Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Hollywood Baptist Church in Chatham, VA, from 2 until 3 p.m. The Celebration of Andy's Life will directly follow at 3 p.m. with the Pastor Terry St. John officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hollywood Baptist Church, Chatham, VA. Family will be at the home other times. Scott Funeral Home in Chatham, is serving the Claytor family. Andy was a friend for life. My whole family especially my Dad thought the world of him. She whipped some hard demons and came out all the better for living the life he had. I miss him still and always will.

I Became friends with Andy when his family moved to Lake Norman and they joined ST. Marks Episcopal Church, where i was also a member. We were friends for years. When I had a small crawling baby Andy came by my house one day and thought it was hilarious to put a tennis ball in my sons sock and watch him drag it around. He was delerious with laughter. Being a Mama bear I didn't see the humour in it but thats the kind of relationship we often had. He would do so many things to get my goat and loved it when i let him get to me. But that was Andy and I loved him then and I love and miss him now. He was a hell of a good person and one of a kind. May he tickle someone's fancy in heaven. Gotta Love him. Hello to his family.

Hard to believe it's been eight years since Andy's death. Andy's sobriety date was 8-16-86 a little over a week ago. We keep track and remember him and his family in our prayers We wear his GBNF patch on our vests.

Char Andy,

Andy and I were in high school band together. We both played trumpet. It was a few years after that when I received Christ and was born again and later called into the ministry. We got connected on facebook and he was an encouragement to me while we were in South Africa. Andy will be missed more than I can say. Deepest sympathy to all the family and God be with you.
