Andrew Cooley Obituary

Andrew Cooley
September 9, 1953 - May 22, 2021
Charlotte, North Carolina - ANDREW JAMIESON COOLEY
Andrew Jamieson Cooley, 67, passed away May 22, 2021 in Charlotte, NC after a short battle with cancer. Born September 9, 1953 in Salisbury, MD, he was the son of Richard M. and Margaretta J. Cooley, the youngest of five siblings.
Andy enjoyed sports, using his speed and agility to play a running back position in high school. However, his favorite sport was tennis, where he earned state ranking as a teen. He continued to play tennis as well as squash at Kent School in Connecticut where he graduated in 1970.
After Kent, Andy followed in his father's footsteps when he selected Princeton University to continue his education. There he played tennis also and was a member of the Cap and Gown Club.
Andy was employed by CitiBank in New York City then moved to Becker Warburg Paribas in corporate finance where he spent time in Paris and London. He then moved to international investment banking with Merrill- Lynch in London. Andy was recruited to Nations Bank in Charlotte in 1996 where he led the Investment Grade Capital Markets business until it merged with Bank of America in 1998. Andy relocated to London to run the International Debt Capital Markets business for Bank of America's investment bank, responsible for all of the firm's activities in EMEA. Andy moved to U.S. Bank in 2007 where he was active in Investment Banking covering financial institutions until he retired in 2019. Andy was a member of the Metropolitan Club in Washington D.C.
Andy was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Robert Cooley. He is survived by his daughters, Rebecca Jamieson Cooley, and Mary Railey Boyd Cooley, as well as his brothers, Richard Cooley(Patti) and Arthur Cooley(Billie), his sister, Katherine Maher(Philip), sister-in-law, Peggy Cooley and many loving nieces and nephews.
Andy was a true gentleman; highly accomplished but always unfailingly kind, considerate and humble. His life deeply touched his family, friends, team mates and co-workers. Andy was as comfortable in his beloved Eastern Shore of Maryland home as he was in New York or London. His magnetic personality and joie de vivre will be sorely missed. The family will have a celebration of his joyous life at a later date.

I send my sincere belated condolences to the Cooley family for the passing of Andrew. He was a special person and very kind and courageous in the friendship we had in school before he went to Kent. He introduced me to Gene Scott, the tennis pro and we played tennis @ UMES SAS children. I´m sure he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

I am deeply sorry to hear this news and my heart goes out to Andy's family. He was a kind, intelligent man and a steady leader in a time of change for many of his colleagues in our company. I had great respect for him and will miss seeing him in Charlotte.

Knew Andy at Kent School. At great upper classman and person. I remember his squash and tennis skills and modesty. Sorry to hear of his loss and extend sympathies.

How sorry I am to learn of Andy's passing. I too am the youngest of five children. I was born Sep 16 of 1953 and was a student at Kent School. It is humbling to realize a loss of another friend in my cohort. Our year at Kent produced an amazing collection of deep friendships, you will be held in the warm embrace of many many caring classmates!

I did not realize that Andy lived on the Eastern Shore, I live in Cape St Claire just west of the Bay Bridge.

Andy was a great friend at Kent School and we were classmates from the class of 1971. I haven´t seen him in many years but was in fact about to call him about our 50th reunion which takes place next month. I send condolences and care to his family and friends.

I have lost a great friend! Started working with Andy at Merrill Lynch in 1984. Unquestionable integrity, always a smile on his face, best-in-class defined by any metric. Things like this should not happen to people like Andy. Was at his side in Nantucket at his last wedding and, will forever treasure what are only extraordinary memories of our personal and professional friendship. He never told me of any illness so, it was quite a `jolt´ to receive the obituary from a 3rd Party.

I worked for Andy back in the late '80's at Merrill Lynch, and we remained friends for life. Can't think of a more energetic, intelligent, and decent person, a total class act. He will certainly be missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
