HICKORY - A 17-year-old high school student -- the daughter of the Catawba County school system's Principal of the Year -- died Monday when her car plowed into a utility pole on a busy boulevard.

Ashley Hope Barnette died instantly when her 1994 Honda Civic hit the pole on North Center Street near Falling Creek Road, police said.

It's May 3....8 years....It doesn't seem possible that you have been gone this long. I miss you always but especially this time of year, pool time! Two years have almost passed and not a day goes by that I dont miss your pretty smile. I cant believe that it has been that long since I have hugged you, talked with you, and heard your laugh. I have all our pictures in my room and I'll never forget your face, but what hurts the most is after all this time I forget how you talked, how you laughed, and how you where you. The pictures arent enough I miss you so much and I just wish for one second I could see you and hear your laugh that I miss so much. Its the little things you forget that hurt. I forget how you made faces and how you looked at me when you knew I needed you. I need you now so much. There are so many things that have happened I have wanted to tell you, and I cant, and sometimes I dont know what to do cause I cant believe you gone. I still have your cell number in my phone cause I think that when I see it in there it seems like you never left, but I know that one day I will get to sit down and tell you all the things you missed. What is there to say about Ashley? She was a lot of fun. I always noticed that in band. Always wanting to have fun and make the class seem a lot brighter. Her and Vandie were just hilarious together, and seeing how it's affected Vandie is hard. I know she's lost a good friend, so has the rest of Bunker Hill. Two weeks before Ashley's death, I lost a good friend that I had went to college with and Fred T. Foard with before I transfered to Bunker Hill. Finding out that Ashley had gone unexpectedly hit me hard. Two people in two weeks? How could God do this to the ones that loved them? I had no answers, but it hit me hard. I know it hit my cousin, Jana, hard too, but everyone I believe tries to remember the good times, and knows that her fun loving spirit will be carried with us wherever we go.

This doesn't seem real. I know we weren't really close, but i know we were friends. We had Mr Miller's Psychology class together and april and i always goofed off with Ashley! Ashley was a wonderful, goregeous person. With many high expectations, that i am sure she would've met. Every time i talked to or even seen her she had a GorGeous smile on her face. Ashley will be missed tremendously, She will always be in our hearts. My thoughts and prayers are with the Barnette family.

I am so sorry as many others all over the U.S. are about Ashley. I am a former student of Leslie Barnette. She was my Principal at Oxford Elementary School and then also at Lyle Creek Elementary, therefore I have known her for a long time. I have to say that she is probably the nicest person I have ever met in my whole life, and also the most considerate. She did not deserve this horrific tragedy. In depest sympathy.

Wow, it was such a blow to the whole school when we heard about Ashley. No one would ever thought that one of our real life angels would be taken away from us. But now she's gone to her home, where all the angels live and it's a great thing. I can remember elementary school with her, and her always being so kind, sweet, smart, and wonderful person to be around. She is and always will be a gorgeous person. I can't believe she's gone. Ashley was a very bright and beautiful person,inside and out. Ashley was a great friend. I remember all the times we used to laugh together in Mrs. Joyce's Spanish II class. She was just one of those people you went into school looking for, for the simple fact that she could put a smile on your face with just one look. We will miss you Ashley Hope Barnette! Ashley and I were in the same homeroom for many years. We always sat near each other and discussed about our weekends or about upcoming events. She was always happy and very attentive in our conversations. This has come as a shock to most of us and it hasn't truly hit me yet. Ashley was a roll model and a very good friend.
