There was only one Dr. Bowe and he is gone forever. Words cannot express how sad I am that the Shining Star of Northwest School of the Arts will no longer be walking the halls with his funny ties and bright smile. Always generous, caring, courageous, and kind. Dr. Bowe - is simply the best! (Cindy Harding, Matthews, NC)

Barry was a music major at Virginia Intermont College and studied music theory and the pipe organ with me. He was an exceptional student in every way, and I have followed his career with great pride. We would visit on the telephone a couple of times a year, and we would also make a plan to see each other when he came to NYC with his "kids" on a theater trip! I am devasttaed by the news and the circumstances of Barry's death as a very bright light has been dimmed.
Sincerely,

I am SO sad to hear this news. It seems unreal that such a sweet, SWEET man, who did so much to help others on this earth is now gone. I served on the PTO when Barry worked at the Bald Eagle Area School District in Central Pennsylvania. I remember going to his office and wishing him well the day he left PA. He always had a kind word and a smile. He did so much for our little school! Our kids LOVED him. May he rest in peace. I will never forget him. All my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Bowe was my principal in PA. He was always the favorite person to go talk to. I remember he would Let you go to his Office and he would let you play checkers. I didn't know how to play but he was so nice he let me win. He is forever part of Port Matilda. I will always remember him...Family is in my prayers!

This guestbook is a small example of how many lives Dr. Bowe impacted. There are repeated references to how nice and cheerful he was and how much his students meant to him. He will be greatly missed. I am still hearing him say "Northwest is simply the best." Rest in Peace Dr. Bowe.

I met Dr. Bowe several years ago at Weberwood Ele. and worked with him as a Special Educator and Lead Teacher of Autism.
Barry...... you had so much compassion for the needs of students. You always were trying to get them to strive to be their best. You were such an Advocate for the Arts.....I remember your music presentation involving KCS students of music at the Clay Center....it was so "you." We will all miss you so much! You will live on in the hearts and minds of every life you ever touched!

Barry, None of us who knew you could ever forget your perfect blend of humor, wit, talent and intellect. Your commitment to achievement and excellence has inspired us all, friends and students alike.
Your legacy lives on in every bright young heart, the joy of learning, loving life through the brilliant prism of the arts and humanities.
How sad we are.

I did not know Dr. Bowe personally, but worked with him sometimes. He was a true angel from God. When we sat in his office to go over what work was to be done in his school. He would always brag about his students and staff. He had so much love for the school. It is hard to find educators like Dr. Bowe. I pray that God bless his family, friends, staff and students during these hard times. I am truly blessed to have worked with him. Will miss those talks Mr. Bowe, you were a great principle and good man. God Bless

I first met Barry when he and I were classmates at Cedar Grove in the 8th grade. He was a very warm and friendly person - even as a young boy. He was always respectful of his classmates and teachers.
I saw him for the last time at our 20th high school reunion from DuPont High. He and I talked for a few minutes and it was really good to see him.
You never know when you see someone the last time - it may be THE last time.
I liked this man a lot and he was a great friend. I am so saddened to hear of his passing.

Dr. Barry Bowe was a genuine educator. He always held the best interest of students, first and foremost. He had the courage to make decisions, listen to new ideas, and remain optimistic in the face of bureaucratic obstacles. He embraced and served as the champion for the vision, purpose and mission of Northwest School of the Arts, believing that Charlotte-Mecklenburg needed and deserved an arts-focused school. My sincere condolences to all who loved him -- his family stretched across many states and cities, as evidenced by those how honor him on these pages. Rest in peace Dr. Bowe and thank you for your dedication and service to all you served.

Mr. Bowe, you carried NWSA on your back my last 3 years there. You didn't just manage; you got involved. When I arrived at Northwest, I loved it, but by the time I left, it was more than just my school. You helped make it my safe haven, my home away from home, a place where I always knew I could find love and acceptance, no matter what. You did amazing things for all of us. I'll never forget you or the impact you've had on my life.

While I didn't personally know Dr. Bowe it's amazing how a person can still touch your life in a positive way. His name was just mentioned last week as another parent and I discussed our children going from First Ward Creative Arts to NW. The other parent commented that it was Dr. Bowe who set her at ease about the transition for her son. He made the difference in my brother's life because he saw the 98% good in him instead of the 2% bad. He displayed justice allowing my brother to graduate from NW while another administrator wouldn't even listen to reason days before graduation. It's sad that stress and politics make life harder for the handful of educators that still seem to care and who definitely put the children before anything else. Dr. Bowe will be dearly missed and I hope he knew how much he meant to so many. To his family, I'm very sorry for your lose. May you have peace and comfort now and for months to come.

Barry was a wonderful person! He was so caring and truly understood that each child was unique and he looked for ways to bring out each child's best! We are deeply saddened to think that Dr. Bowe's infectious smile and gentle person will no longer be the gift to our children that it was at NW. My daughter decided against an early HS graduation in favor of attending NWSA because of Dr. Bowe. He had a passion for the students and for education. I know his dream was to take NWSA to its full potential. He created an environment that was welcoming and accepting. My daughter has loved attending school there and it was his influence and leadership that made the difference. He will be sorely missed. Dr. Bowe, I didn't know you very long but you taught me lessons about kindness and what it means to truly and fully love others by your example and by the stories I heard this year of how your treated your students. You are missed very much. We are praying for you "and your kids" especially the ones that needed you most.

I worked with Barry on various projects when he was at Bald Eagle Area High School in Pennsylvania and I found him to be one of the most outstanding and caring administrators I've ever had the pleasure to interact with. We shared many of the same ideas and there was not ever a doubt he loved his job and he loved the students he worked with every day. He brought a smile and laugh to anyone he talked to. His standard for excellence was to be admired and he helped to encourage all the students to strive for excellence. It was a tremendous loss to our organization when left. My sympathies go out to his family, friends and co-workers. Theresa Peters

Dr. Bowe was a beautiful person inside and out. He would always smile and have something encouraging to say to all of us students. I am fortunate to have been in his presence. I want to take this opportunity to say to Mr. Bowe, something I never got to say so many years ago..."Thank you". Having you as a director in the Bellaires(DuPont High School, Belle, WV) was a gift. You opened my mind to different genres of music, not just country and the 80's "Hair Bands"... lol. Everytime I scan the channels on the radio and I stop on an "undesireable" channel, as defined by my girls, I think of the Bellaires and your demand to broaden our musical "pea brains". As a yearbook sponsor (journalism class, woo-hoo) your demand to "paying attention to detail" has ultimately helped me in my career. Although we gave you a rough time, you wouldn't have wanted it any other way, I again say "Thank you" for the difference you made. Rest in Peace.

I am absolutely heartbroken. Dr. Bowe went well out of his way for me many times and was without a doubt the best principal anyone could ask for. He did so much for so many people. Words are truly not sufficient to decribe what a wonderful, beautiful soul he was. His pure dedication to his students was incredible and I can only hope that he knew how much he meant-and will always mean- to us. If his death has impacted us so much I cannot begin to imagine the pain his own family must be feeling. To them, I would like to send my consolation for the loss of a man as brilliant and wonderful Mr. Barry Bowe and let them know how profoundly he has affected my life and the lives of all my Northwest friends.

I met Barry about two years ago when introduced by a mutual friend. Barry was quiet, reserved, and observant. He listened intuitively before commenting. I did not think he liked me at first due to his quiet demeanor, but I learned that he actually did and we became friends. I'm deepely saddened by his passing. I spent New Year's Eve with Barry and a group of friends, and I will cherish our last conversations. Barry will be missed. CMS has lost a truly amazing principal.

Dr. Bowe was one the brightest spirits I knew and the best principal I could have ever asked to have. He worked hard to make positive changes at Northwest School of the Arts and sought to see every student do well, both in their academics and art classes. He was a friendly face to all and will live on in the hearts of many, many people. His death is a tragic loss to those at Northwest, the community, and in other, distant locations. Dr. Bowe was my principle for 3 years, he was more than just a principle he was a friend. I remember in sixth grade he held an asembly. We were all shouting Dr. Bowe, Dr. Bowe, Dr. Bowe. Then he did a little dance and started to raise the roof. Dr. Bowe was more than a principle at NWSA he was a warm spirit you saw everyday. Every afternoon and morning in the carpool lot he would stand out side even in rain or snow and great you as you came or left. In the afternoon he would always have his little stop sign he held up as cars pulled out. Dr. Bowe was a part on Northwest and that whole will never be filled after he left. We all will dearly miss him.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news..My thoughts go out to the family. Barry always had a smile on his face and was always walking as if he couldn't wait to get to where he was going..You will be missed, Barry!

I am so saddened by this news. Barry has touched so many young lives and he has always given it all when it comes to his students. Not just an excellent leader - but he loved every single life he touched. Each child had a piece of his heart forever!
Barry, you will always be in my heart as I could never ever forget you! You were an angel on earth - now you have your wings!!!

Barry was always a kind man with such a great sense of humor. It was evident to all that he was a caring person who truly loved the arts and educating young people. A great loss...

I started at EBHS the same year as Barry. He was so passionate about his program as well a great friend. I have many fond memories chaperoning and working with his show choir. Years pass and friends lose touch. Rest well my friend. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

Barry was a good person from the very beginning. I remember when we became friends in the third grade. Through the years, he was always passionate about something new he had learned or discovered. He was someone I enjoyed catching up with. I will miss knowing Barry is out there doing something wonderful, but I am sure he will continue to influence all who knew him. My best to his family.

Barry, I believe that heaven welcomes you and your gift of music with open arms. What a wonderful addition to the choir of angels! May your heart and those of your family be filled with a song for the ages knowing as surely as the Apostle Paul that,"neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things to come, nor powers. Nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Rom. 8:38,39
