Benjamin Smith Obituary

Benjamin Blair Smith
WAXHAW -- Mr. Smith, age 53, slipped into the arms of Jesus surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 25, 2009. He died at Carolinas Medical Center of injuries sustained in a construction accident. Ben was an avionics technician employed by US Airways in Charlotte.
Ben's life experiences were varied and adventurous. Born in the Amazon Jungles of Peru, Ben grew up in Ecuador and also spent time in the Sudan. Upon graduation from Parkwood High School, Ben attended Covenant College and Central Piedmont. In 1984, he and Faith Bartholomew were married; their three girls and son are strong and beautiful adults.
Ben will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a devoted husband and father, brother, son, and true friend, creative and skilled craftsman, and a great lover of nature and the out of doors, especially of birds and wildflowers. He was also a gifted musician, whose guitar arrangements and performances never failed to brighten every family reunion. Ben was generous and kind, thoughtful always in his relationships with other people.
Ben is survived by his wife, Faith; four children, Katy, Krista, Heather and Jeremiah; father, Don Smith of Waxhaw; sister, Susan (Harris); brothers, Scott, Mark, and Tim; and a large extended family of loved ones and friends.
The interment service will be Friday, October 30th at 3 p.m. at Rehobeth Presbyterian Church, 5919 Rehobeth Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173. A memorial service will follow at 5 p.m. at the Townsend Building, 7405 Jaars Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173.
The family is served by Gordon Funeral Service in Monroe, NC. Online condolences may be made at www.gordonfuneralservice.com.

I have many memories of Ben but here is a humorous one. When Susan and I were roommates, he sent me a cassette that he had made of some of his favorite music. Only he sent it like it was from a Chattanooga music company with a form included on which you could order more like it. I promptly sent in an order. It came back undeliverable. Susan and I even went so far as to look in a Chattanooga phone book to try to find the street address. It didn't exist. When Ben found out what I had done he thought it was the funniest thing ever and never let me forget how gullible I was.
