Beverly Bruce Obituary

Beverly Marie Neely Bruce
WEDDINGTON -- Beverly left this beautiful world on August 17, 2009, surrounded by her family at the Levine and Dickson Lodge in Huntersville -- hopefully headed for a gated community in not too hot a region. Ours is not to judge.
Born on November 10, 1954, in High Point, Bev was the daughter of Sidney Landry Neely and Mildred Witherspoon Gideon Neely; and the granddaughter of the late Howard Gideon and Lucy Hinman Gideon, of Baton Rouge, La., and the late Eugene Austin Neely and Lillian Landry Neely, of High Point. In addition to her grandparents, she was predeceased by her wonderful mother; uncles Austin, Bill and Steve Neely; aunts Mary Edith and Peggy Neely; and cousin Chris Neely.
Bev is survived by her loving and devoted husband Robert Dolford Bruce Jr. and their incredible daughters Neely Marie Bruce and Caroline 'Callie"' Sydney Bruce, of Weddington; her dear father and stepmother Sid and Virginia Neely, of Charlotte; brother Sid Neely Jr., of Washington, D.C.; brother Bob Neely and his wife Pat, of Charlotte; and sister Liz 'Betsy' Neely Heafner and her husband Jim, of Charlotte. Also, nephew Alex Neely, his life partner Heather Carrion and their daughter Isa"bev"a; niece Elizabeth T. Neely; uncles Byrd and Jim Neely; and aunts Judy, Carolyn, Betty, Landry 'Honey' Neely and Mary 'Tiny' Poff. Other survivors include members of the Hinman, Carley, Ricketson and Jorgensen families, and many cousins to carry on the Neely family lineage.
Bev was a devoted genealogist for her family from a young age. She spent her early years in Atlanta, where she was happy as a tick. The Neelys briefly lived in Wheaton, Ill., until the family begged to return to the South. They moved to Charlotte in 1966, and never moved away again. Bev attended Lansdowne Elementary, Randolph Junior High and East Mecklenburg High School, where she graduated in 1973. She studied at Greensboro College for two years before graduating from the East Carolina University School of Art in 1977. 'Ms. Neely' was an elementary art teacher in the northwest area of Charlotte for eight years. She loved teaching and was named Teacher of the Year at University Park Elementary School. She also worked at Camp Nor'wester on Lopez Island, Wash., for three summers.
In 1982, Bev met Robert Bruce on a bike ride in the country, and they became best buddies. He would always say, 'If you'd grown up in my neighborhood we would have built forts and played Army together all the time.' They married on October 22, 1983. Upon the arrival of their beautiful daughters, Bev resigned from teaching to be a full-time mom. She would later begin Studiobev, her professional artist's studio. And always, with the greatest husband by her side, she maintained her sense of self.
She was a member of the Guild of Charlotte Artists and the Charlotte Art League, and served on the board of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. She was president of the Tarheel Cyclists, and a member of the Weddington Racquet and Swim Club. Her civic activities include her 23-year membership and service as past-president of Lower Providence Women's Club, and a 40-year membership at St. John's Episcopal Church, where she was on the vestry. One of her latest and greatest endeavors was her role as Charlotte Chapter Director for Flashes of Hope and co-director for Flashes of Hope at Victory Junction Gang Camp. She was recently honored as a 2009 LINK Leading Lady nominee.
In February of 2006, Bev was diagnosed with Stage 3 ovarian 'c'. She tackled it with great force, and after 10 months of harsh chemo treatments, she declared victory, crediting her active lifestyle for being in shape to do so. During this time she began sending out emails that chronicled her experiences and the progress of her journey for friends and relatives who became known as her 'Dear and Faithful Readers.' The emails soon evolved into regular inspirational writings that touched more people than she would ever know. Her artistic spirit had begun to shine through these uplifting written words that were perhaps, with the exception of her daughters, some of her most successful creations. Her 'newsletters' were forwarded all over the world to hundreds, even thousands, of strangers; strangers connected by someone who cared. She continued writing through her remission, and those folks were there for her when her 'c' returned in September of 2007.
She leaves heartfelt words of thanks to her dear Dr. Tait(er), Meg, DeLeslie; ALL the oncology nurses at Blumenthal Cancer Center; the nurses on 11B at Charlotte Medical Center; and Debbie, Susan, Peggy and Nicole and the other special nurses in the infusion room. Thanks for allowing Bev to be herself and have fun!
A visitation will be held at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 1510 E. 7th St., 6:00-6:45 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2009, followed by a celebration of joyful remembrance at 7 p.m. A worship service to celebrate Bev's life, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Womack, the Rev. Murdock Smith and the Rev. Dee de Montmollin, will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1623 Carmel Road, at 2 p.m on Friday, August 28, 2009. The family will receive friends in the parish hall following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Flashes of Hope, 6009 Landerhaven Drive, Suite I, Cleveland, OH 44124, or flashesofhope.org Charlotte Chapter; The First Tee of Charlotte, 2661 Barringer Drive, Charlotte, NC 28208; or Levine and Dickson Hospice House, 11900 Vanstory Drive, Huntersville, NC 28078.

Robert, I am sorry for your loss. You do not know me. I am Bill Hinman originally from Clarksdale, MS. Bev was a 2nd or 3rd cousing of mine. My father was Francis Hinman of Greenwood. His father was Preston Buckingham Hinman, her grandmothers brother. Our side of the family has drifted apart in recent years. The last time I saw Bev was in New Orleans at Aunt Adah's 50th anniversary as a Dominican Sister. I currently reside in Columbia, SC. I hope soon to contact Sid, your father-in-law. Again I am sorry for your loss. From what I remember of Bev, she was a wonderful person.

Sincerely, William P. Hinman

Dear Robert, Girls and family, please forgive my delay in this very sad condolence to all of you in the passing of sweet and loving Bev. She is an inspiration to so many and a star that will shine in the sky forever. She was a great friend in College and always. I loved her humor and her outlook on life, a lesson we all can learn from. I hope you will find comfort in knowing how many she has touched and inspired every day of her wonderful life here on this great earth. We all loved her and will miss her, God bless you all. Hi Robert,
It's been many years since we biked the Blue Ridge Parkway with Sierra Club friends, but I was so saddened to hear of Bev's death that I had to write to say how very sorry I am for your loss. Although I only met Bev a few times long ago, I could tell she was a fantastic human being, and have many times since read about her in the paper and smiled, thinking of how happy the two of you must be. Please know that you and your family are in my prayers, and that I celebrate with you Bev's beautiful spirit and her incredible legacy to the world through your daughters, her creativity, her art, her writing, her volunteer work, her visionary Flashes of Hope organziation, and so much more. What an amazing woman and a gift to so many. She was an inspiration, and I know she will be dearly missed. I wish you and your family andfriends comfort and joy in your loving memories, and know Bev will be sending you love from her new "gated community."
Blessings,
Maureen

I, of course, have spoken to Liz and Jim (who is my cousin), but Robert and I both wanted to speak to the entire family to say how glad we are to have known Bev, even so briefly. She was a terrific person and brave beyond measure. I know the family is distraught at having lost such a presence. We will keep you all in our hearts during this difficult time.

I am thankful to have known and have been a relative of Beverly. She was a wonderful person with a God given talent; not only artistic, but a talent for sharing. May God bless all of her family and friends. May we all remember her positive attitude and let it be an inspiration for us.

Bev was an incredible artist and an incredible person. I knew her and worked with her for years in the Guild of Charlotte Artists and the Watercolor Society of NC. Bev thought outside the box and her creativity was truly amazing, for she was always coming up with new and interesting ideas. She was a fabulous artist.

It was a pleasure so see Bev's always smiling face at church (St. Johns Episcopal) on Sunday mornings, accompanied by her charming family.

Bev radiated joy.

May God's love comfort family and friends left behind.

Bev was my "newest" cousin-in-law thru Robert's mother, Jane Quasebarth. My life has been enriched because Bev wanted to find her beloved husband's family and, therefore, I was able to to know just a bit about this incredible woman and her incredible family. I send you, Robert, Callie and Neely, my deepest sympathy. Words cannot really help, of course, but I hope you all are feeling love and support all around you. Love, Ruth Anne (Quasebarth) Carl, St. Charles, Missouri

I am so sorry for your loss.
I met Bev through Flashes of Hope. I remember reading the article in the local paper and contacted her to be part of this organization. After exchanging many humerous emails, I knew before I even met her face to face she would be a great person and friend.
Bev was and always will be such an inspiration to me as I am sure she is to many others.

She will be missed

Robert,Neely,Callie
and all the Sid Neelys,
I have been trying to come up with the right words to express my sympathies to all of you.I am certainly not the writer that my dear cousin Beverly was.I don't think many people have her talents.
Bev did have the best, most interesting obituary I have ever read. This goes to how she was a friend to all she met and to how much she accomplished in her life. But the thing that stands out most is that she was first and foremost a part of a larger picture.... her family. Bev was the glue (you might say super glue!)that kept our "Neely" Family connected. She will be greatly missed! I still can not believe she is not with us on this earth anymore. It seems like a bad dream. But this past week on Thursday as I walked my dog on a path near a creek ,a beautiful hawk flew past us,not once but several times. Then on Friday after a storm ,a beautiful rainbow appeared. I just know in my heart that these were signs from Beverly. She is at peace and now doing God's work in heaven as she once did here on earth. The beauty of Beverly is all around us!
I am so sorry for your loss.I know my heart aches, so I just can NOT imagine the sorrow and pain you have in your hearts right now.
God Bless you all. With love and prayers from "cuz"(as Bev always called me) Jeannie
(Michael,Teddy & Matthew send their love also)

To The Family Of:
Beverly Marie Neely Bruce

My deepest condolences and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow. May God comfort you now, and in the days to come. Beverly and I were classmates and friends during the years that we attended East Meck. She was a delightful and positive person, always smiling. When I read the obituary, I pulled down my 1972 yearbook, looked at her beautiful class photo, found the place where she signed my yearbook, and thought deeply about how she will truly be missed by family and friends. Take care, and again please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,

Rob, Neely and Callie - Bev was such a bright spot in our neighborhood. I have so many memories of Neely and Malcolm playing and also of Callie and Hannah (in the snow). Bev's painting of Malcolm has always had a place of honor in our home. She was always such a fun, genuine person to be around. She would often surprise me with photos she had taken of our children playing. Please know we send our deepest condolences and prayers at this time.

Robert, Neely and Callie - we were very sorry to receive a phone call this evening telling us this very sad news. Although it has been 17 years since we left Peach Grove Lane, it seems like it was yesterday that we were neighbors! Huge hugs for all of the family.

Beverly and I worked together years ago in CMS and what a joy it was to be in her presence. Her smile was a joy to see at the end of long, long days and her compassion was unmatched when it came to children. I am so very sorry for your loss and will keep your family in my heart and in my prayers.

Robert, Neely, Callie and family,
Bev is one of the most remarkably positive people that we have ever met. Her strength and support during our daughter, Kelly's battle with Ovarian Cancer was so helpful to us. She will always be in our hearts and we will try to cary on her example of how to live life.
We think about you every day.

Dear Neely and Bruce Families, my wonderful southern cousins:

Maybe one of the best decisions I made in my young life was to go on a college exchange so that I could be touched by the kindness of the Neely family and especially Beverly's grace and spirit. Your family is precious to me and I will always deeply appreciate your welcoming ways when I was a college student. I'll never forget Bev picking me up at the airport in her red convertible sports in January of l982. I knew at that moment that I had just met the coolest cousin a girl could have. So funny, so full of life and so willing to spend time with me.

I loved receiving her emails and felt a closeness that many felt along with a huge sense of pride in knowing what a strong woman she is to be that creative and humorous while faced with such a challenge.

Bev's life has been a gift and she is a God given inspiration. I feel privileged to be among the thousands who are better humans because she danced with and left brush strokes on our hearts.

Sure wish Silda and I could be with you for the services. Please know you are in our prayers.

Dear Callie and Family,

Please accept the heartfelt condolences of the Peace family at what is doubtless a moment of great pain and sadness. It seems that the time we have with those nearest and dearest to us can never be enough. May Bev's light shine on in your hearts, and those of the generations of Neelys and Bruces to come.

Dear Neely and Bruce families, please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Some of the fondest memories of my life were working for Mr. Neely in the Art Department. What a wonderful place Neely Associates was for a young person to learn about the publishing world. It is amazing the friendships that have endured through my employment at Neely Associates. The Neely family will always be a testament to integrity and kindness. It felt like home and family there. Beverly was always a welcome visitor in the Art Department; we loved her talent, humor and kindness. May God bless you all and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm laughing through my tears as I read Bev's words. What a character she was! I'm so glad we connected again at the ASTI luncheon in 2007, and I'm just sorry I missed out on so many years of friendship between graduation in 1973 until then. My heartfelt condolences to the family, and my promise to Bev to help continue her good works. God bless you all.

Robert, Neely, Callie and the rest of the Neely family - what a beautiful obituary for an extraordinary woman. I am honored to be a "Friend of Bev" and have been truly Blessed by her gift of friendship. We did not know each other a lifetime but we had a special and deep connection that grew fast. She taught me so much in such a short time. To me, she defined the word Grace. I will treasure the memories, especially of our Price's Chicken Coop feast in the Levine/Dickson Hospice House - she never ceased to amaze me. I know how much she loved the beach and I am at the SC coast this week - so I went out to see the sunrise yesterday in celebration of her life and thanked God for allowing our paths to cross her on earth. You are all in my prayers and may you find peace in the toughest of days that lie ahead. Love, Anissa

Our deepest condolences. Our fondest memories of a "quick witted" comedy writer and presenter at Kanuga, and a smile that always reminded me of Red Skeltons smile that could bring you into her soul, if not just for a little while.

We love and will miss you, Bev, until we meet again.

I started at Fidelity Express a little over a year ago. I never met Bev in person. But I enjoyed and was so inspired by her beautiful emails. She was filled with God's grace and He gave her a personality and love that radiated through her words. She was a blessing to me and an example of how a child of Christ should face life in every aspect. My prayers and love go to this wonderful family. May God Bless!!!
