Bill Bullock Obituary

Dr. Bill Bullock
September 9, 1938 - January 2, 2023
Charlotte, North Carolina - Dr. Bill Bullock passed away peacefully at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, on Monday, January 2, 2023, surrounded by the love and support of his family.
Born in Independence, KS, on September 9, 1938, Bill graduated from the University of the South before entering the United States Navy Officer Candidate School in 1960. He served until 1966 and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant (JG). After his Navy service, Bill felt called to serve and care for others. He graduated from medical school at the University of Tennessee-Memphis School of Medicine and completed his internship at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center). Bill then became a senior resident at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine, specializing in internal medicine.
Upon completion of his medical training, Bill devoted himself to providing steadfast, compassionate care for his patients for 45 years. In addition to his private practice, he served as chief of staff at Presbyterian Hospital (now Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center) and as medical director for Bank of America.
Beginning in 1988, Bill embarked on a new way of life through Alcoholics Anonymous, where he found meaning, purpose and true fellowship. His desire to help others also found expression in his work assisting recovering people in the community. Bill served as medical director at the Dilworth Center and later received the Jody Kellerman Award for outstanding contributions in the field of substance-abuse treatment.
Bill died with a heart full of gratitude for his loved ones, including his wife, Cynthia Carlson; children, Will Bullock and his wife, Jane, Jonathan Bullock and his wife, Mary, Martha Bullock Baker and her husband, Chris; stepson Marshall Carlson and his wife, Lynn; grandchildren, Lilly, Fowler, William, Berkeley, Campbell, Ellie, Lindsay, Kate and Hendrick.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Jimmie Adcock, The Reverend Connor Gwin of Christ Episcopal Church and Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region for providing Bill with compassionate care.
A private memorial service will be held for the family.
Memorials may be offered in memory of Bill to: UNC School of Medicine/UNC Health Foundation, 123 West Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516 (https://unchealthfoundation.org/) or Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 7845 Little Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28226 (https://www.hpccr.org/giving).

I was unaware Dr. Bullock had passed until today. He was my doctor for several decades, from when I was in high school until he retired. A more caring and gracious man I never knew.

An incident with my father, also a patient of his, illustrates this fact. Dr. Bullock became my Mom's and Pop's doctor after Dr. Matthews retired from Travis Clinic. When Pop had a heart attack there was some policy at Presbyterian that a doctor there would be Pop's doctor, not Dr. Bullock. Dr. Bullock showed up the next morning, not in a Doctor's white coat but a suit coat. He explained that he couldn't be there as his doctor but was there as his friend. It reassured all of us. THAT is the kind of man Dr. Bullock was.

Thank you for the care. God bless.

I am so sad to hear of Dr. Bullock's passing. He was my doctor at Bank of America and First Charlotte Physicians for over 20 years. He had the greatest sense of humor. When I'd call the office because I was sick, Dr. Bullock would return my call and always say "what's wrong with you, Pal?" Not only was he a great doctor, he was also a great friend. My heartfelt condolences to his family and prayers for comfort.

He was truly the most compassionate physician I have ever seen. I have missed him since he stopped seeing patients. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us -he was a remarkable man and physician!

Our prayers and thoughts are with all who loved Dr.Bullock, especially thinking of his precious family at this time. Dr. B was the medical director of Employee Health at Presbyterian Hospital for many years, and was so amazingly kind to all. When we weren't talking about work he was talking about his wonderful family; he was with us when he had his first grandchild which put him over the moon! Dr. Bullock was one in a million and such a blessing to everyone.

I attended high school with Bill in Independence Kansas and one of the classes we that we attended was Band & Orchestra. Both of us played trombones and Bill was the best trombone player in the band. In fact, we had a trombone trio with including Bill, myself and Barbara Bilyeu. Bill was one of the most liked students in his class.

Bill's wife, Cynthia Carlson, was his biggest cheerleader. Through her, we knew of Bill's work - and his efforts to level the playing field for all to enjoy the best treatment, delivered with professional compassion. Dr. Bill will be missed, but his legacy is still expanding. Thank you Cynthia, and Bill's entire family for sharing this remarkable man with us.
