Bill Mantis Obituary

Bill P. Mantis
Mr. Mantis, age 70, a devoted husband, father and grandfather died Monday, January 16, 2006 surrounded by his loving family.
A native of Vinianoi, Greece, Mr. Mantis was born July 7, 1935, a son of the late Panteli Mantis and Eleni Monias Mantis. Mr. Mantis was a hard working individual who always strived to provide the best for his family. A chef in Greece, Mr. Mantis uprooted his family and emigrated to the U.S. in 1968 for a better life. Using his talents as a chef, he established and owned restaurants that will always be fondly remembered. Known by his customers as 'Big Bill,' he owned the New Athens Restaurant for 25 years, the Matthews Family Restaurant for eight years, Stassinos Restaurant for eight years and Mantis Family Restaurant for 18 years.
He was a long time member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Evrytanian Association of America, and had also served as the President of the Adelphotis Vinianiton Association.
Mr. Mantis is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Voula Mantis; and three daughters, Maria Nickolopoulus and her husband, Bill, of Charlotte, Athanasia Kokkotos and her husband, Spero, of Greece, and Joanna Mantis-Katsanos and her husband, Nikolaos, of Charlotte; and four grandchildren, Lemonia and Athanasios Nickolopoulos of Charlotte and Theodosios and Vasilios Kokkotos of Greece; as well as three brothers, Triantofillos Mantis of Greece, Nick Mantis and George Mantis, both of Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Stavros and Pete Mantis, preceded him in death.
A Trisagion will be held at 7:00 PM Thursday, January 19 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral with Father Michael Varvarelis and Father Andrew Walsh officiating. According to his last request to be buried in his homeland, he will be laid to rest in Karpenissi, Greece.
Mr. Mantis will always be remembered for his warm smile. He was a generous and caring man. Many lives have been changed for the better because of Mr. Mantis' caring love and support. May his memory be eternal.
Memorials may be sent to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Foundation, 600 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203.

Joanna and the entire Mantis family -

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. I wish that I had a story to share that would bring a smile to your face or ease your pain, but I realize that this will come from those who knew Mr. Mantis best.

Joanna - I truly feel your pain because, as you may know, my father passed away exactly 14 days before yours. Please know that I'm thinking about you and that I'm here if you need anything. Remember that adversity reveals character, it doesn't build it, so stay strong and try to take one day at a time. I pray that God blesses you and your family with comforting memories of your dad that may give you strength in the days ahead.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow. "Big Bill" treated me and my family with great kindness and love as we patronized his business. He was a man of great character and cared for others.

To Voula and the family of Big Bill:

An everlasting memory of Bill will be embedded in my heart because he was so generous and always kind to me. I truly enjoied my days spent working at Athens. I think back to those days often. It was a true blessing to me to have gotten to know you all, but especially Bill. I looked up to him as a father figure, a man of great character and value. I learned so much from my time at Athens and it all started when Bill told me I could work there. He will deeply be missed by so many. May God guide you through this time of grief. I think of you ALL very often. Much love and may thanks for so many memories Bill.
