Bradley Thompson Obituary

Bradley Deforrest Thompson, Jr. MATTHEWS - Bradley Deforrest Thompson, Jr., age 71, of Matthews, NC, passed away at his home on Monday, May 19, 2014. Commissioned in the US Army as a captain, he served his country proudly, receiving a bronze medal for service during the Vietnam War. He currently worked at Cardinal Lane Book Fair in Charlotte; however, his true passion was women's basketball. In 1999 Brad helped form a girls' basketball organization called the Piedmont Pride. For the past fifteen years, Brad had successfully run this organization, which assisted young ladies in the development of their basketball skills. He believed that female athletes deserved the same consideration and chance for success through competition, dedication, recreation and fellowship. He was a strong supporter and volunteer for the Porter Ridge High School athletic department and was well loved by faculty and students. He is survived by his children: daughter, Ina Louise Thompson of Concord, NC, who is a math teacher and head women's basketball coach at Porter Ridge High School; and son, Bradley Deforrest Thompson, III, daughter-in-law, Lisa and their three children: Cameron 13, Christian 9 and Connor 2, of Lubbock, Texas; brother Stuart R. Thompson of Charlotte, NC, and brother Peter C. Thompson of Duncannon, Pa. A memorial service in his honor will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 6:30 pm in Cuddy Arena at Wingate University, 230 North Camden Road in Wingate, NC. In lieu of flowers, his family requests memorial gifts in Brad's name to Wingate University Women's Basketball, Wingate University, P.O. Box 159, Wingate, NC 28174.

Brad and I worked together in the food service at Dickinson College years and years ago. He brought me snacks and meals when I was out sick--such a grand friend. I will miss him. Barbara Hunt Conrad Class of 1964 Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA

Ina, we were so saddened to learn of your father's passing. He was so passionate about The Pride and gave so much of his time and effort in pushing these young girls to live up to their potential and to keep trying. We know he will be sorely missed by many. We are lifting you and your family up in prayer.

Ina & Family:

We are so sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you!

I so enjoyed getting to know your dad and talking to him at all the basketball games. He always made the effort to talk to us and say hey in the concession stand. He will be so sorely missed!

Brad was the founder of the team I have played on for the past 4 years. Brad was always carrying, he always put everything into Pride. He spent his Saturdays at tournaments all day. He came to practices. It was great to know someone who cared about not only our basketball lives but also our personality's. He got to know us and he will always be a part of our life's. He will be missed.

We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Brad's passing. We have many fond memories of the girls playing ball with the Piedmont Pride origanization. One of our favorite memories was when he was asked to leave the gym during a heated debate with a referee. He was passionate about basketball! Our community will feel the loss of a good man and champion of women's basketball. Our prayers are with you during this difficult time.
