Carol Sluder Obituary

Carol Swindler Sluder LAKE NORMAN - Carol Swindler Sluder, 89, of Lake Norman, died December 17, 2015. Her husband, Dr. Harold Miles Sluder, passed away in 1985. She is survived by her four children: Henry Sluder, Linda Sluder, Mark Sluder and Elizabeth "Kit" Sluder, all of Charlotte, as well as her two grandchildren, Addie (James) Hall and Jonathan "Mike" (Sarah) Sluder, and two great-grandchildren. The daughter of an Army Colonel, Carol was living in occupied Japan following WWII when she met her husband, then an Army Captain. They married in Tokyo in 1947 before settling in Charlotte. Decades later, she returned to Japan with her grandchildren. Carol traveled widely and was passionate about learning from other cultures, and inspired the same enthusiasm in her family. Carol lived a full life, firmly believing that we are all God's children and that everyone deserves love and acceptance. From making sandwiches for civil rights movement workers to opening up her home on countless occasions to international guests and those in need, she led a Christian life by example. Carol translated books into braille. At least one veteran was able to graduate from college thanks to a combination of her braille text books and her relentless encouragement. She was a charter member of Chapter G of P.E.O., and she and Harold were founding members of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Carol gave generously, often anonymously, to many nonprofits and individuals. Her warmth, grace, and humanity will be missed by many. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 21. A reception will follow. Donations may be made to Trinity Presbyterian Church, www.trinitypreschurch.org or Camp Blue Skies Foundation, www.campblueskies.org. The family would like to thank Hospice of Iredell County for their remarkable care.

Just learned of Aunt Carol's passing. Although, we all did not get to know each other as family should I feel sure we would have found out we all had much in common. When my husband and I first moved to NC years ago he was taken to the hospital and your dad came and checked on us and gave us assurance that the doctor the hospital suggested was a good doctor. He was so right.......then, that Christmas when Evil Knievel action figures were so popular...I could not find one for my little boy..........Aunt Carol pulled some strings with a friend of hers and got one for us. Just knowing you all that short time added memories to my heart.
Please know that I am praying for you all that God the God of all Comfort will give you peace during your time of sadness. Love to each of you.

Mark, I am so sadden by the passing of your mom. Carol and I enjoyed a warm and sincere friendship for many years. I know she loved all of you children but I think that you and she enjoyed a very special relationship. I got to know you through our conversations even before I met you. Your visits to Gutmanns were always a welcomed interlude. I still enjoy the Christmas picture you gave me of the Catholic church uptown (my advanced years I can't remember the name).

I wanted you to know you and your family are in my thoughts and heart.
