Caroline Elliot Obituary
GREENSBORO -- Caroline Elliot, age 61, died at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro on May 3, 2007 of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
A memorial service will be held in Greensboro on Sunday, May 6 at 3:00 PM at New Garden Friends Meeting at 801 New Garden Road. A reception will follow.
Caroline was born July 1, 1945 in Charlotte to John Drew and Ann Mauldin Elliot. She graduated from Myers Park High School in Charlotte and earned a BA from UNCG. She attended Columbia University in New York where she received her Physical Therapy degree.
Caroline combined her physical therapy skills and commitment to peace and social justice through her work with the American Friends Service Committee in Africa and South Vietnam where she met David Bailey, her loving husband of 33 years.
She moved with her family to Greensboro in 1979 where she worked in the Greensboro City School System for 25 years. She dedicated her career to helping disabled children and was a much loved member of the Gateway Education Center staff until her retirement last year.
Caroline loved hiking, camping, gardening, and travel - including recent trips to Alaska, Ireland, Brazil and her return to Vietnam in 2002. She was active in Friendship Friends Meeting continuing her life long commitment to social justice. She was a Girl Scout whose camp songs, outdoor skills and leadership she passed on to many girls in this area. She loved to spend time with her many friends and family, especially her two young grandsons, Robert and Luke.
She is survived by her husband, David Bailey; daughter, Jessica, her husband, Lyn Stimpson, and grandson Robert of Helena, MT; son Rob, his wife, Annaliese Zeiler, and grandson, Luke of Loveland, CO; mother, Ann Elliot of Charlotte; sister, JoAnn Davis of Winston Salem; brothers, John Elliot of Charlotte and Robert 'Hoppy' Elliot of Winston Salem; godchildren, Deedee Nachman, Sheldon Currier, and Caroline Elliot; lifelong friend, Barbara Dowd; and so many aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and dear, dear friends who will miss her greatly. She was predeceased by her father, John Drew Elliot of Charlotte.
Caroline was a powerful person who empowered those around her. She accomplished much and helped many throughout a life that was cut way too short.

As a sufferer of Lyme Disease my heart goes out to the family and friends.
I never met Caroline, but it sounds like she was a wonderful gift to this world.

To Caroline's family,
I was in college with Caroline at UNCG although I only knew her then in passing. We reconnected last year at Curves and we often chatted as we worked out. She was so happy and excited about her family and grandchildren. My thoughts and prayers are with you in the days ahead. May God bless you and comfort you all.

Caroline or Toad, as I knew her, was a special friend to me. I will always remember her smile, her laugh, her ideals, her love of camping, her adventurist spirt. She was a strong influence on me when I was a teen and I was fortunate to stay in touch with her through the years. I will miss her terribly.

Caroline was my best friend in elementary school. We shared many adventures during that magic period of childhood. She was funny and fun, and adventurous. Her honesty and generosity were absolute.
Ann, Joann, Johnny and Hoppy, I remember so many happy times with you all.

To Caroline's Family, I went to Myers Park with Caroline. I remember Caroline as an energetic and kind person. Always hanging with Barbara, the quiet one. Caroline had not changed a bit at our 35th reunion. I enjoyed talking to her so much that evening. I am so sorry for this sad loss. Caroline is surely one of God's favorites. My prayers are with all of you. And you, too, Barbara. So sorry for your loss of a special friend!

Caroline was a gentle, good-humored, down-to-earth presence in Quang Ngai. I was down the road, working with another organization, but any conversation I had with her always left me wanting to linger in more conversation. She was...empowering--I word I didn't know then, but I could sense it in her presence.
David, I can't imagine your grief. You will miss her more than your friends can know. But all the same, you're a lucky guy to have all those memories, spanning a full third of a century, with her. May those memories, and the support of those around you, provide some small measure of consolation.

David and Family,
there is a bridge between the land of the living and the land of the dead. That bridge is love, the only eternity. For the love never dies. Think how many of us loved this woman and how we will pass our love for her and her good deeds on to others, some of whom may have never have met her in person, yet they will hold her name in their hearts. She truly left this place full of people who love her and she left the world better because she walked this way! Now go and tell of Caroline especially to those grandchildren and teach them her lessons of love.

We worked with Caroline in Quang Ngai, S. Vietnam. She was loved by all who met her, especially David! What a compliment they were to each other. David's laugh,Caroline's smile,and their gentleness yet firm committment to justice and peace had an impact on all who met them. Caroline will be missed by many. We were truly blessed when Caroline joined us in Quang Ngai, Vietnam, during the war.
She was deeply loved by all team members,students and Vietnamese patients who met her. She spread love and kindness all around her.
