Charles Duncan Obituary

Charles Albert Duncan, Jr.
December 27, 1942 - January 12, 2023
Charlotte, North Carolina - Charles Albert Duncan Jr., 80, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, January 12, 2023.
Chuck was born on December 27, 1942, to Charles and Marion Duncan in Evansville, Indiana. After graduating from Parkway High School in St. Louis, MO, he attended George Washington University. After college, Chuck served in the US Marine Corps before returning to his hometown to begin his career as a haberdasher, first at Harvey Ltd and then back to D.C to join Arthur Adler Clothier as Vice President. For the next twelve years, Chuck dressed businessmen, Presidents, and Secretaries of State. No matter who you were, Chuck greeted you with the same enthusiasm and impeccable taste. In 1980 Chuck ventured out on his own, relocating his family to Charlotte, NC, where he acquired Jack Wood Ltd. and carried on the store's reputation for fine men's clothing. Chuck quite literally clothed a few generations of Charlotte men. Chuck seemed to know and was liked by everyone. If you needed to reach someone, you could do it through Chuck. Chuck was LinkedIn before there was LinkedIn. Chuck embraced his new hometown with passion from the get-go. He was instrumental in the development of Uptown Charlotte, including the Chamber, Central Charlotte Association, Discovery Place, and the Panthers expansion committee.
After Jack Wood Ltd, Chuck's civic work led to a second career in sports marketing when he joined Muhleman Marketing in 1995. He spent several years guiding the expansion of the NFL. Chuck finished his career with his dear friend and entrepreneur Brian O'Leary, helping lead two of Brian's companies.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Flynn Duncan, his daughter, Leslie Duncan Cuthbertson and her husband Bill, his son Brent Flynn Duncan and his wife Jenny, and five grandchildren (William Reynolds Cuthbertson IV, Catherine Flynn Cuthbertson, Kate Mitschele Cuthbertson, Zoe Jane Duncan, and Annie Maguire Duncan), his sister Sandra Duncan Brand, his sisters-in-law Ann Flynn McGaley, Elizabeth Flynn Martinkovic and Nancy Couch Duncan. Chuck was also dearly loved by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his beloved brother Robert William Duncan.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place 2 pm Friday, January 20, 2023, at St. Peter Catholic Church, 507 S Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28202. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Levine Children's Hospital or St Peter Catholic Church.

I loved having our first connection on Biltmore Dr.
There were so many interconnections after that.
I had forgotten the story, but that was Andrew´s bicycle that was stolen. Chuck chased the thieves down on his car and recovered it.
One of his many adventures, it seems, in preventing crime

Charlie was the older brother I never had. I note Jim Luttrull's message, and I too met Charlie (who gave himself the nickname The Falcon) through his brother Bob back in high school. He and the Duncan family let me into their lives in a way that lasts to this day. The Falcon never faltered in being a friend and confidante. While Life led us along different paths, and distances between us increased, the first words in any conversation we had melted all that away and it was as if nothing had changed. I was blessed to have him as my friend. And I could see, as could all others who knew him, that he was blessed himself by the family he nurtured, and by Kathleen, the love of his life. Fly High Falcon!

My best friend for over 62 years. Charlie and I both left Evansville to attend Parkway High School and we have kept in touch. I will miss our calls, sharing updates about family and the past events. Charlie, I will miss you. Love you, Jim

Chuck was an encourager and mentor to me at the origin of O´Leary Waste. He connected me with many influential professionals in the Charlotte market to assist in advancing our client base. At my first employment review, one of my goals was to grow my own influence to emulate Chuck´s.

Chuck was strong yet humble, determined yet accommodating, and he was always there to lift you up on days you struggled. He gave me advice when asked, and quietly advocated for me at all times.

He was a man of high integrity and was not shy to express his love and pride for his wife and family. Chuck lived a life we should all aspire to follow. He will be missed!

Much love and many prayers to cover you all in this time of great loss.
