Christy Reid Obituary

Christy Eve Reid MATTHEWS - Christy Eve Reid, age 63, of Matthews, NC, died May 8th, 2014 at the Carolinas Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and the complications of a bone marrow transplant. Mrs. Reid was born February 8th, 1951 in Charlotte. She was the oldest of three children of the late Carolyn Roesel Eve and Robert Michael Eve. Christy graduated from East Mecklenburg High School where she was class valedictorian. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Smith College in Massachusetts where she spent a year abroad at the University of Geneva studying economics in classes taught in French. She went on to the UNC Chapel Hill School of Law where she was an editor of the N.C. Law Review and graduated with honors. She was a partner at the Charlotte law firm of Robinson, Bradshaw and Hinson for over 25 years, considered RB&H one of the best law firms in the country and appreciated, as does the family, their wonderful support throughout this long battle. Mrs. Reid's professional accomplishments include as a Law Clerk to the NC Supreme Court, Board Certified Specialist in Estate Planning and Probate Law with the NC Bar Association, Board of Governors of the NC Bar Association and Chair of the Estate and Fiduciary Law Section, President of the Charlotte Estate Planning Council, Chair of the NC Board of Legal Specialization, State Chair of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and most recently as a Regent to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel where she chaired the Fiduciary Income Tax Committee. Besides being acknowledged as one of the first women to become a partner at a major Charlotte Law firm Mrs. Reid has been recognized at various times by the Legal Elite Hall of Fame, by Woodward White in "Best Lawyers in America", as Charlotte Trust and Estates Lawyer of the Year, as a "North Carolina Super Lawyer", "Top 100 Lawyer" and "Top 50 Female North Carolina Super Lawyer". She was elected to and served in many capacities as a Fellow with the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel. Mrs. Reid was a frequent lecturer on estate planning, administration and tax law. She published articles and authored several manuals on Estate Planning used by attorneys and financial institutions all over the state. Mrs. Reid was a devout lifelong Christian and attended several area Lutheran churches. Her faith was very instrumental in helping her get through her long and tiring ordeal. In the past she served on the Church Council and Education and Finance Committees at St. Mark's Lutheran. She served on the Board of Trustees of Charlotte Christian School and spent many hours while her children were growing up as a Cub Scout leader and Girl Scout volunteer. She was a person who possessed boundless energy and enthusiasm for everything she did. In addition to her legal work and church she was a devoted traveler organizing many family trips around the country and abroad. She especially loved being at Bald Head Island and her house that she designed virtually every square inch of. But her main love and interest was for her family including her husband and partner of 40 years Scott with whom they built a great family and life together. She loved and was very proud of her three children and their spouses: Lauren Reid of Matthews, Ian Reid and his wife Becca of Parkersburg W.Va. and Olivia Linthavong and her husband Kanhka of Burlington. She was very much looking forward to being a grandmother to the two newest additions to the family, Eli Bradstreet Reid and Eliana Christy Linthavong. Mrs. Reid is also survived by her younger brother Michael, his wife Kim and younger sister Betsy and her husband Bruce. In addition she is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will miss her very much. The family thanks Christy's many friends who have been so supportive throughout her 16 month ordeal. She had the prayers of many people who helped her keep faith and hope alive on many days when things seemed darkest. The family also appreciates the tireless work and support of all the doctors, nurses and other health care professionals at Duke University Hospital and Carolinas Medical Center who brought Christy through so many tough times and continued to work so hard at overcoming the long odds and allowed us to keep hope alive against a tough disease. It takes a special people to do that work day in and day out. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road, where the family will be receiving friends from 6-8pm on Monday, May 12th. A funeral service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 4545 Providence Road, at 11:00 am Tuesday the 13th, followed by a reception at the church. A private family burial service will be held later that day. Memorials in Christy's honor may be made to Be The Match Foundation, which pairs bone marrow/stem cell donors with needy blood disease patients 3001 Broadway Street N.E., Suite 100, Minneapolis, MN 55413-1753, or Bald Head Island Conservancy, which supports barrier island preservation, conservation and education P.O. Dear Scott, Mike, Betsy, and family,

I hadn't been to Charlotte in decades, but was there yesterday for a brief spell and happened to stop by St. Mark's Lutheran Church. A gentleman at the front desk let me know that Christy had passed away, and the news absolutely floored me. I am so very sorry for your terrible loss. Christy and Carolyn were so purely selfless in helping me and my brother through the loss of my mother back in the 80s, and I have never forgotten their countless kindnesses, even though as a teenager working through my own grief I was never able to adequately express my gratitude. I won't forget spending time with your family at the beach: you all had a transformative effect on helping me to set my sights high when it came to my education, and I wouldn't be where I am today were it not for Christy's influence and guidance. Thinking of you all with sadness and fondness.

Dear Scott and Family,
I just learned that Christy died in May. I was shocked and saddened beyond words. I would never have
imagined she would die so young.
She was too good a person. I am so
very sorry I lost touch over the last
five years. Christy was my
closest friend in law school. She
was smart, pretty and kind and had
such a level head. In that
competitive environment, she was
liked by everyone. She never lostsight of her values. She was just
a really fine person. I first met her in our first semester "small" class in
contracts. Everyone was so uptight
that first day and so serious except
Christy who was calmly admiring a
tea pot she had just purchased. "I'm Christy Eve", she said, "like
Christmas Eve". There was no
pretence about her. She adored
her family. This is just terrible. I admired and liked her so much. I live
in Santa Fe, but always thought we
would have time at some point to
catch up. I think she lived a really
good life. I am so sad and so very,
deeply sorry for your loss.

My condolences to the family - Christy was a friend in our law school days and I have many lovely memories of her beauty, warmth and intelligence. I only wish we had stayed closer over the years since I left North Carolina. A great sadness is passing through her former classmates as the news is spread. Know that she was well-loved, always.

I spoke with Rose this morning and she told me that Christy had died. Shocking. We had so many great conversations over wine and food and at softball games. I'm sorry for any suffering she had because she surely did not deserve it. She was kind and smart and dear. I remember our fun trip to Bald Head Island one year. My condolences to Scott, Lauren, Ian, Olivia, Betsy, and all the family.

Dear Scott and family, I am devastated to learn of Christy's passing. We lived in Eastway Park growing up and my family was good friends with the Eve's and I used to regularly baby sit for Christy, Mike and Betsy. I remember the children would make me stand guard in the bedroom doorway till they fell asleep. It breaks my heart that I did not get to talk with Christy before she passed. I know she will be missed terribly by all that knew her. Sending heartfelt sympathy and prayers for the family. Denny and Louise Scruggs

Scott and Family,
I was a classmate of Christy's at Smith - and we were fellow North Carolinians which gave her a special place in my heart.
Christy was full of joy and life and she had a brilliant mind.
She will be greatly missed by all of us who had the privilege to know her.
I mourn the loss of Christy and my prayers are with you all.

I was "goggling" another East Mecklenburg graduate ('69) tonigt and was stunned and dismayed to see Christy's obituary appear. Christy was a credit to East Mecklenburg, our UNC-CH undergraduate class ('73), and all fellow graduates of the UNC School of Law. Her record, achievements and most of all her warm, intelligent and lovely personality were always inspirational to her contemporaries. May her memory be a blessing to her family, friends and colleagues.

May 15, 2014

To Christy's family,

Knowing and working with Christy at East Mecklenburg HS was a daily pleasure, because Christy lived joyfully and shared her joy with everyone around her. I am not surprised at her accomplishments since those high school days, and I am so proud to know of her faith expressed in service over these many years.

I am persuaded that she is hearing a "job well done" from the Lord Jesus now that she is Home. May God bless and comfort you family members in the sure knowledge of a life well lived and a rich reward gained.

It was a privilege to know such a devoted, dedicated Christian woman. I worked as Financial Secretary at St. Mark's for many years and got to know Christy when she served on the Finance Committee and as Congregational Treasurer. I could always depend upon her to be there no matter how busy her schedule was - even to the point of her leaving work to come to the church to take care of any unexpected financial situation that might arise. What energy she seemed to always have! She was truly a blessing and has been called home much sooner than any of us would have liked. Praying for God's peace and comfort for her family.

Scott and Family,
I was saddened to learn of the passing of your wife and mother. Sue Honeycutt kept me informed of the hard battle Christy endured during her illness. May God put a smile on your face and a special peace in your heart as you cherish the time and memories you experienced with her.

Christy has used all her talents to accomplish more than everyone I have known. I grew up at St. Mark's Lutheran with Dr. Carveth Mitchell and Dr. Peter Setzer, both auspicious people of God, where we both were involved with Luther League, Sunday School, and Luther Choir. We were Confirmed as Lutherans in the same class and graduated East Mecklenburg High School in the same class. Christy was my first best friend growing up in the church. I and my parents, the Kepharts, attended Christy's wedding at the church, in her mother's wedding dress. I miss Christy and her mother, Carolyn, who I enjoyed so much. Carolyn was a formidable grandmother "who raised you up".
We watched our chldren grow together in faith. My son, David Wright, was a part of the children's church involvement with Olivia, Ian, and Lauren. God bless you all.

Christy was my best friend in high school. From the first day I had an extended conversation with her, I loved her. We had wonderful and interesting conversations that I'll never forget. My thoughts and prayers are with her family - her husband and children, whom I never got to know, and to Betsy and Mike, whom I remember very fondly. Christy was an amazing person; I wish she could have stayed longer. God bless you all. My deepest sympathy.

I knew Christy from when we all attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church. My mother, Betty Goodwin was good friends with Christy's mother, Carolyn. I was friends with her brother Mike and his wife Kim. Christy was an awesome person, professionally and personally. I know she will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I met Christy through Susan McCroy and will always be in awe of her. Her love and devotion to Susan endeared me to her forever and we became good friends. I mourn the loss of such a special person who achieved so much in such a short time.

Dear Scott and family,

My sincerest condolences to all of you for your loss. I am glad to have known Christy even for a short while. I will always remember Christy for her enthusiasm and love for life. I appreciate the way she welcomed me when Ernie and I visited at Bald Head Island. I pray that the sacrifices and struggles you endured, the care and the love that you gave to Christy during her illness will help to comfort you and bring you peace. As Christy's secretary at RB&H for 7 years, I was constantly amazed at her tireless dedication to whatever she was involved with, be it family, work or church. Her brilliance was self-evident and her accomplishments achieved with such ease. My sincerest condolences to all her family. She will be so very missed.

Ian, during our silent prayer time at church tomorrow, I will be saying a prayer for you and all your family. Mothers are special people and tomorrow will be a day of mixed blessings as you remember and honor your mother. She is with God now, out of pain, and preparing for the day when her loved ones eventually join her.

My thoughts and prayers are with you,Christy's family at this time. I can honestly say I know what you are going through right now. I lost my daughter, Susan Ivy McCrory, to cancer. She was in the RBH Law Firm with Christy, and they were great friends. Christy was there with us throughout Susan's illness, and I will always remember her kindness and support. She was one special lady. You are all so lucky to have had her as a wife and mother. Please accept my sincere sympathy. Beverly Ivy

Very saddened to hear that. She was such a wonderful person with so many unusual and entertaining insights (and the most chockablock notebooks I've ever seen).

From Hafiz:

WHERE are the tidings of union? that I may arise–
Forth from the dust I will rise up to welcome Thee!
My soul, like a homing bird, yearning for Paradise,
Shall arise and soar, from the snares of the world set free.

Sending all her close one prayers of support.
