Dan Shaver Obituary

Dan Shaver
Mr. Shaver, 56, of Charlotte, died peacefully Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at his home after a heroic battle with cancer. He was born on June 6, 1950 in Charlotte and was a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School. Dan attended Central Piedmont Community College and served in the United States Army Reserve.
Dan left a Texaco distributor in 1979 to start his own petroleum wholesale firm, Carolina Petroleum Distributors. The ambitious entrepreneur meticulously learned every aspect of the oil business, from sales to home heating delivery. The company expanded under Dan's keen business sense to cover not only North Carolina but the entire Southeast as well.
A visionary, Dan quickly saw that the rapid growth of the Charlotte region would need some retail convenience stores to support it. Within a few years of founding Carolina Petroleum, Dan dove into the cutthroat world of convenience stores by opening the first Petro Express, which Carolina Petroleum still services today. Petro Express started with the purchase of all Unocal 76 locations in the Charlotte market in 1986, followed by the 1995 acquisition of Conoco's local operations, and many privately financed locations. The two companies shared the same building and common ownership, but were run as separate, standalone privately owned businesses. The two firms, which encompassed a retail side and a wholesale side, complemented each other. Since that ambitious endeavor, Dan has helped grow Petro Express to sixty-six stores spanning two states.
Dan was featured in the July/August 1998 issue of SIGMA Magazine Independent Gasoline Marketing for his commitment to serving his local area of Charlotte with products and services that represent a high standard of quality. Dan was instrumental in industry-wide promotions such as automatic car washes, the Beer Cave, credit card and cash acceptors at-the-pump, and bounce-back pricing. Dan was familiar with meeting the CEO's of the major oil companies, as well as the day-to-day customer at Petro Express.
A multidimensional person, Dan enjoyed many passions, a few of which were motor sports racing, scuba diving and traveling. Dan first started racing in 1992 as not only the driver, but also the car owner and sponsor under Shaver Motorsports. Dan competed in Busch Series, ARCA Series, and SCCA Series races. Racing led Dan into another facet of motor sports, engine building. His passion for how things worked and how to make them work better enticed him to open an engine shop within Shaver Motorsports. Dan's success attracted the attention of NASCAR and Busch racing team owners. Shaver Motorsports' engines performed so well that they were used in research and development by several racing teams.
Even with Dan's success, he was a generous man. He chose to give, but to give quietly. Serving the community and giving something back is represented by Petro Express' involvement with local children's charities, cancer wards, the American Cancer Society, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, local chambers of commerce, little league baseball teams, and other community efforts to solidify the position as a corporate citizen that cares.
On-line memorials and tributes may be made at www.mem.com. In honoring Dan's wishes, funeral services will be private. Contributions may be made to the Dan Shaver Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 240606, Charlotte, NC 28224 or to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 E. 7th St., Charlotte, NC 28204.
It has been said that life is not a spectator sport; that it should be enjoyed. That's just what Dan Shaver did. He made his life and he enjoyed his life; he enjoyed the ride. Life was much more exciting and enjoyable with Dan around; there wasn't a dull moment to be had. Dan was immensely loved, greatly admired and will be deeply missed.

Danny's Family,

I just learned today (10/31/07) that Danny passed away earlier this year. I know you will miss him greatly. It's been over 30 years since I've seen or spoken to Danny. We went to South Meck and CPCC together. After we were out of school we both lived in the same apt complex on Park Road. He was a great friend during that time. Please accept my condolences as I am very sorry to learn of Danny's passing. My thoughts and prayers are with all of the family.

Donna, Erin & Justin, I only learned of Dan's passing recently, but wanted you all to know that my heart breaks for all of you. Everyone at Petro Express & Carolina Petroleum is never far from my mind, and I still miss the place and the people so much.
Dan was always kind to me, and I still miss telling him Goodbye at the end of the workday. I'd always ask him,"Gone for the day?", and he'd always answer,"Far as you know,", and we'd both laugh and say see you tomorrow. Donna, God be with you, Erin, & Justin. You will remain in my thoughts and prayers.

Erin, Justin and Donna, my heart goes out to you. I knew Dan many years ago. His humor and constant 'balls to the wall' attitude made him such a unique individual. All who met him were immediately drawn in just to see what would happen next. It was only in the past year I was fortunate enough to re-connect with him. I was moved to see how strong he was facing his physical challenge. He is a truly special person that I will never forget. My deepest sympathy to your family.

Dan,
For many years we've shared a lot. Wonderful times and painful times. Mortgages, car loans, dirty diapers, family, jokes, and much, much more. Your family loved you for "you", and they always will. The most important "things" we shared were two wonderful children, Erin and Justin, and an amazing grandson, Max. We were very lucky people. Until another day. Love, Mickey

Yes, it is me again...daddy there is so much left unsaid.....To our father and grandfather: you left us physically, but not spiritually, and entered a new home where there is peace, unconditional love, and acceptance. We will miss you dearly and await our next encounter with you. Thank you for reminding me how important family is and for giving us all the opportunity to spend the last four months around you. You brought Justin and I closer and formed a bond between us that we are so thankful for. You have always encouraged me. Sometimes our relationship was like a sleeping dog, resting, but never dead....I always knew you loved me. In our hearts, minds, and souls....you will be loved, cherished, and remembered always-Erin, Justin, and Max xoxo...you are loved so much!

Dan was one of my very best friends for over 30 years. We met because of Corvettes and the last time I saw Dan, in Sept. 06, I thought he was going to take me out of this world in that mean Vette that he was very proud of. Dan and I shared many wonderful times together, especially the last couple of years. My wife is also suffering from cancer and he was always so very encouraging and helpful. It was because of Dan that my wife and I met 23 years ago. I can't forget him for that.
I knew Dan was a true friend and a very good businessman... just look at what he accomplished. But reading all the entries from people that worked for him has really proven that he was a giving individual. Those tributes say so much of the giant of a man that I knew. He told me so many times last year that he just wanted to help people that needed it and give back to the world. He wanted to leave a legacy and that is just one other thing that he has accomplished.
May God take care of him and maybe build him a racetrack with turns made of Gold. I pray that God will carry Donna and his kids, Erin and Justin, thru these times of pain.He loved you. He was so happy to have you both with him last year.
I love you Dan Shaver!!

Dan's loving daughter, Erin

January 5, 2007

I am missing you so much. I love you more than you ever knew. I cherish every moment spent with you. The dodging of bullfrogs in the street, Vermont with Donna and Wacky, Spiderman paw paw, being my softball coach, teaching me to drive a clutch although I dropped the clutch out of your porsche, riding mopeds in Key West (again with Donna and Wacky), college graduation, and many many many more.....Thank you for all you have done and for just listening when I needed a friend. Thank you also for giving me life, now I am able to have a child of my own who god knows, acts A LOT like you. He certainly is a Shaver. And he loves and misses you too. You are and forever will be in my heart and mind. Until we meet again, dad.
My heart goes out to Donna and others who are hurting as much as Justin, Max and I are. I know you will continue to look after us in your new home. I love you!!

As Vice President of Circle K, I was very fortunate to meet Dan 4 years ago and develop a rewarding personal & professional relationship. Dan's love for the business and his employees was genuine and heartfelt, his demeanor and ethics a role model for all. "Simply The Best" not only reflected Dan's competitive spirit as an excellent retailer but in my opinion, was a description of Dan Shaver as a human being. My most sincere sentiments are extended to those with whom he worked & influenced. We've all lost a man of wisdom, integrity, passion, & love ..."Simply The Best"

Many years ago Dan and I began a business relationship, which soon developed in a friendship, and personal relationship. With Dan you did not need a written contract because his word was his bond. Dan was truly a very special person who lived life to the fullest chances and it will never be known how many charities Dan supported and so many people he helped.

Dan touched my life in a very special way and I will always smile when I think of him. I truly believe that our paths crossed as a gift from God and that God had a plan for our friendship and our journey together. Dan had a tender heart and was a very generous man. He believed in helping the less fortunate and in giving all people a chance for a better life. I only knew him for a short time but he impacted my life tremendously. I know he would not want us to be sad but to smile and remember the fun times we shared with him.
