Darryl May Obituary

Darryl Spencer
May
April 30, 2022
Pisgah Forest, North Carolina - The sky cracked on April 30th, leaving a hole in the universe when Darryl Spencer May passed away. Known by many as "Big D" or "SCAMP," Darryl was an exceptionally loyal and caring friend. He could strike up a conversation with almost anyone, even the customer service reps he talked to on the phone. Darryl was an intelligent individual, having the answers to most questions. He was a military aficionado, especially interested in the Civil War. While Darryl possessed a sardonic wit, one of his greatest gifts was his ability to make almost anyone laugh. He could find humor in just about everything, and no one could deliver a joke better than Darryl.
Darryl received his BS from Francis Marion College in 1975, where he was a charter member of the Kappa Alpha Order, serving as treasurer and vice president during his tenure. Starting his career in South Carolina with Southern Bell, he transferred to Charlotte, NC, and worked with Bell throughout the post-divestiture changes from Bellsouth to AT&T.
After retirement, Darryl and Sheree followed their dream and carved out a piece of heaven in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. Living there was one of the happiest times in Darryl's life. He had even begun to consider himself a bit of a "mountain man" as he kicked back on his deck, enjoying the mountain views surrounding him.
Born in Florence, SC on April 9, 1954, to Spencer and Mary May, Darryl frequently spoke of his many memories from his happy childhood, especially fishing with his dad and going to movies with his mom. Darryl leaves behind his loving wife, Sheree Martines-May, his mother, Mary May, sister Leslie Spencer, husband, Donn Harms, his brother, Val May, and wife, Dawn, and niece, Sophie.
Friends and family will celebrate Darryl's life in Charlotte on May 14. The celebration will be aired on Zoom for those unable to make the trip to Charlotte. Details will be forthcoming.

I enjoyed working with Darryl for most of our careers. We were from the same area of SC and shared many memories. He was a faithful, devoted, caring friend who would make you laugh and forget your troubles. He and Sheree ministered many times to Gary and me after Gary´s cancer diagnosis. Thankful God created Darryl and allowed our lives to cross paths.
Praying the Lord´s peace and comfort will surround and sustain you in this season of grief.

Darryl will always be remembered as our honorary Santa at all the office Christmas parties, but also as a grumpy CSA with a sardonic sense of humor who could always make you laugh. We used to "race" home from work, me in my Honda Element and him in his blue Altima. There wasn't much racing going on but we tried to see who could get to Boyce and Sardis roads (where he turned off) first. He was willing to drive a little faster than I, and I would take short cuts to try to cut him off. There was some hilarity involved.
I tried to catch up with him recently but could never find him on social media and unable to reach him on his old phone numbers.
RIP old buddy! You'll be missed!

I am so sad to hear today about Big D. I sat very close to him at BAPCO (BellSouth Advertising & Publishing Co). He kept us all belly laughing all day long. I left in `02. I was so happy when, I heard later he had gotten married. I am so thankful his last years were so happy & blessed. We sure lost a good one.

Big D was one-of-a-kind. I met him through my wife. They worked for Bellsouth Advertising and Publishing prior to Google and the Internet. And the collection of individuals that worked there all appreciated Darryl for his quick wit and ability to make people laugh. I regret that we didn't stay in touch. But I'll never regret calling him my friend. May he rest in peace. Prayers for Sheree and the rest of the family.

We are both shocked and saddened at Darryl´s passing. He was so much fun to be around, with the sort of wit that always made you think and take yourself less seriously. To Sheree, Mary, Val, and Leslie - we will keep you in our prayers. Thank you for sharing Darryl with us. Much love
