David Biggers Obituary
David Carl "Buddy" Biggers, M.D., of Asheville, formerly of Charlotte, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at his residence.A native of Charlotte, he was a son of the late William Carl and Mabel Williams Biggers. After attending public schools in Charlotte, he graduated from Davidson College in 1954. Dr. Biggers then attended the School of Medicine, University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, graduating in 1958. He served his residency in Internal Medicine from 1958 through 1959 and completed his residency in Pathology from 1959 through 1962 at Grady Memorial Hospital/Emory University in Atlanta, GA.
In 1962, he enlisted in the US Medical Corps in experimental Pathology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center/Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC through 1965.
He initially practiced General Pathology at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, GA and then became Chief of Pathology at Holy Family Hospital in Atlanta, GA. He ten left Atlanta and moved to Asheville, NC in 1971. He was Associate Pathologist at Memorial Mission Hospital, becoming Chief of Pathology and Director of Laboratories in 1984 through 1994 when Mission and St. Joseph's Hospitals merged. He retired in 2000.
He was a Fellow in the College of American Pathologists and a Fellow in the Association of Clinical Pathologists. He was a member of the AMA, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the North Carolina Society of Pathologists, of which he was a former president.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was a Ruling Elder, and a member of the Chancel Choir. He was a member of the Biltmore Forest Country Club, the Rhododendron Royal Brigade of Guards. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Asheville Chapter of the American Red Cross, WCQS Public Radio and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
A loving husband, father and friend to all who knew him, Dr. Biggers is survived by his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Glenn Biggers, and his three daughters, Elizabeth Glenn Seimer, Mary Rebecca Biggers and Marilyn Biggers Peterman; a son-in-law, Jeffrey Scott Peterman; his mother-in-law, Mrs. James H. "Lib" Glenn of Asheville; and his brother-in-law, James H. Glenn, Jr., along with his children, Martha, James and Murray Glenn of Charlotte, He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kaeta Maria Seimer, William David Peterman and Zoe Elizabeth Peterman. Also surviving are a sister, Marilyn Neisler and her husband Henry Neisler, and their children, Parks, David and Hayne Neisler of Kings Mountain, NC. His brother, William Paul Biggers, MD, preceded him in death and he is survived by his wife, Joyce Biggers and their children, Joy Machelle and William.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 5 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Albert "Pete" Peery officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Gardner Hall at First Presbyterian Church.
